The first settlers in Murray were farmers and their families who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1820. In 1830, the town was organized as a village by a group of businessmen and gentlemen led by David Covington. It had no post office until 1853 when it was moved to Murrayville after that community merged with Murray. The early coal mining days are documented in local history as well as records from mines located near present-day Murrayville and Greeneville. Coal production declined after World War I but restarted in the 1920s due to new technology developments such as high explosives used to blast coal seams apart which made mining easier and more efficient than previous methods. The city of Murrayville was founded on land donated by John Hargrave about 1900. He abandoned his plans for the city when railroads came through his area so construction began on what would become Murrayville only two years later on October 8, 1902 using private funds supplied by millionaire George Prentice Jr.. The original name for the town was Gentry but was changed to Murray because John Hargrave's father had been born thereabouts in 1792.
