In Newport, Kentucky, the Coast Guard has been playing a critical role in the community for over 100 years. The Coast Guard is quintessential to the city and its namesake, Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. The company was founded in 1887 by George POindexter and eight other businessmen as a shipyard and dockyards. After the war she patrolled off America's East Coast until decommissioned in 1922 at Norfolk Virginia under command of Commander W F Barber Jr.. In 1937 she became assistant coast guard station commander at Portsmouth Virginia before moving permanently to Newport News where she remained until her retirement in 1969 when she was replaced by HMCS Algonquin (LCH-1).
