Newport, Kentucky is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky that is located on the Eastern border of Louisville, Kentucky. The population was 5,902 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Newport was Captain John Smith in 1715 and he named it after his home port, Portsmouth in England. In 1812, General James K., Major-General Donelson's army passed through Newport on their way from Washington D.C.–the Battle of Monmouth took place nearby that same year and it is said that General James K.'s horse got lost and ended up at Newport where he found some milk cows (now known as the Donelson Dairy). A few years later, on October 12th 1814, during the Mexican War, Commodore John C. Morton's squadron anchored off Newport while they unloaded supplies for Admiral David Dixon Porter's expeditions against Mexico City; when night fell they burned all but three of the warehouses belonging to Nicholas Ashley Beall who had built a pier at Whitehaven Point opposite Newport Harbor which served as harbor for boats used by shipping operations including those operated by Commodore Morton and Admiral Porter In 1816 President James K.'s brother John Quincy Adams visited Newport while on a tour of Eastern United States ports along with his friend Secretary Hickory Claybourne; they stopped at Whitehaven Point where Admiral Porter landed his troops to embark for Vera Cruz before sailing back upriver under cover of darkness to New York City In 1861 Governor Thomas Fenton appointed Jno Hennepin County Treasurer which led to an increase in business activity around town attracting people from surrounding counties such as Jefferson and Campbell counties who were interested in becoming residents or buying land near Newport because there were no other places like it then In 1865 Confederate General Robert Ewell called a meeting at Whitehaven Point and announced plans to invade Kentucky proper so soon after Benedict Arnold's surrender at Appomattox Court House; this led to open warfare between Union forces and Confederate forces throughout most of America including Kentucky until April 9th 1865 when General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House without any battle taking place in or around Newport On November 20th 1881 Joe Grimes was elected Mayor over incumbent Wm Goudreau by a wide margin due largely to support garnered from local farmers who believed Grimes would make good investments in their communitiesimentary programs; Grimes held office until May 2nd 1898 when he died suddenly due to pneumonia complicated by cerebral meningitis Through all these years many businesses have been opened up or continue existing but not much has changed about daily life here except for some occasional events/events leading up to holidays like Christmas or July Fourth

The first permanent settler in Newport was James Gist, who arrived in 1792 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson decided to move his army through present-day Kentuckiana during his march from Memphis to Washington D.C., and he arranged for local farmers to supply his forces with food and water at points along the way. During this time, Newport emerged as one of Jackson’s most important destinations because it had become an important transportation hub for goods arriving along the route.
