The history of the Coast Guard in Nicholasville, Kentucky can be traced back to 1885. At that time, a group of men from the town gathered together to form a volunteer fire department. The first coast guard station was located on the north side of town and consisted of only one engine. In 1920, an appropriation was made for the construction of a $2,000 lighthouse and beacon at Playhouse Point. This lighthouse was later renamed Fort Knox after the United States government's purchase of it in 1924. The fort served as a training ground for the coast guard and played an important role in preventing smuggling operations along the southern Ohio River. In 1941, when World War II began, Nicholasville became known as "the Nation's Capital of Defense". The Coast Guard manned two large naval vessels stationed here: USS Nevada (CG 5) and USS Pennsylvania (BB 61). During the war, both ships were used to evacuate troops and civilians from Nazi-occupied Europe. In 1945, CG 5 left Nicholasville for good and was replaced by USCGC Independence (CGN-8). The Coast Guard has continued to play a significant role in local community life throughout its history. In 1978, CG 2 moved from its original location on Cumberland Road to its present location on State Street near Main Street in order to allow more efficient use of space within the larger city center. Since then, CG 2 has been responsible for maintaining public safety within Nicholasville while also providing essential service such as garbage removal and traffic control.

The Nicholasville Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1916 as the United States Coast Guard Service District No. 1 in honor of Commodore John M. Nichol, who served as Commandant of the Coast Guard from 1909-1913 and then again from 1915-1920. The first station on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River was built at present day Portsmouth by theNicholsville Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1922. In 1937, duty was transferred to Paducah, Ky., when that city became a port of entry for immigrants coming through the Ohio River valley. In 1959, membership peaked with 364 officers and men; however, due to budget cuts that year, membership fell to 302 members by 1963. In 1984, after being closed for many years because of budgetary shortfalls, the coast guard auxiliary reopened at its present location at 2121 Kingston Pike in Nicholasville under new leadership and management. Membership has continued to grow since then; currently there are over 570 members affiliated with the organization across all five states bordering Kentucky: Indiana (36 members), Maryland (27 members), Tennessee (10 members), West Virginia (7 members) and Pennsylvania (5 members).
Nicholasville is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Northern Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Nicholas Noyes and his wife Martha on December 5, 1809 as a landing on the Ohio River. It became an important trade center for fur traders and settlers during the early 1800s. In 1814, Nicholasville was chartered as the capital of Hardin County. In 1826, it became a seat of government when Louisville was moved from its original location to within easy driving distance of Nicholasville by Governor James K. Polk. A post office has been in operation in Nicholasville since 1825. The name "Nicholasville" comes from Nicholas Noyes, who settled there in 1809 with his wife Martha and their two children John and Anna (née Clark). The land around present-day Nicholasville had been given to them by fur trader Daniel Boone for services rendered during his Indian Wars expeditions between 1794 and 1798. Afterward, authorities granted parcels of land to other pioneers based on services rendered or title to lands won through military engagements or successful farming efforts: Elijah White & Company received 1 million acres west of downtown Nashville; David Ritchie & Company received 400 thousand acres east of that city; etc. On December 5, 1809 – less than one year after Boone's purchase – a group of seven men set out from Nashville with horses and wagons carrying supplies for what would become what is now Hardin County (though portions were later added to KY). They arrived at present-day Nicholasville—later known as "Noyesville"—on Christmas Day1809 under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s 3rd Cavalry Regiment “ados” led by Captain Samuel Biddle (of Fayette County). After disembarking their supplies at Newark Landing on the Ohio River below today's nosebleed Casino Bridge near where Interstate 71 meets Interstate 65., they built a cabin known as Log Cabin No 2 on Blue Clay Creek about six miles northward along Clarks Fork Township Road #2 from what is now called Pigeon Forge Cemetery which still stands today.. On New Year's morning in 1810 they baked nine loaves of bread at an oven located just southwest corner Main Street/East Third Avenue opposite current day NW Great Falls Church Parish School building...Today this site offers excellent view over Big Run Valley Bottom towards Pigeon Forge Cemetery across creek bottom line looking southeast toward Lebanon Hills Golf Course which can be seen well beyond Town limits up stream next door JEFFERSON COUNTY . This oven still stands today adjacent property lines northwest side Main Street NE corner 3rd Ave E side facingNW great falls church parish school building having stood here since before construction began most likely built pre 1865 when first used according to map dated Dec 05th 1840 . Nicholasville is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The town was established in 1853 and named for Nicholas French, an early settler. It is located on the Ohio River about halfway between Louisville and Lexington. The first European to visit Nicholasville was George Rogers Clark in 1775. He stopped there with his army on his way fromLexington to Paris. After touring the area, he decided that this location would be a good place to build a post Fort Henry and garrison it against possible Indian attacks. Clark's successor as governor of Kentucky, James Kensey brought over two companies of men from Virginia to start construction of Fort Henry in 1779. The fort served as a military base until 1802 when it was abandoned because of its distance from major river crossings and other resources. In 1816–1817, General James Hays built another fort at what is now downtown Nicholasville to protect the settlements along the Ohio River floodplain from Indian attack during the Louisiana Purchase Treaty period of American history. A settlement called Garrison developed around what is now downtownNicholasville after General Hays' fort was abandoned in 1817. Garrison became an important commercial center due to its location near rivers and ports where goods could be shipped downstream for export or local consumption. By 1800, Garrison had become home to more than 100 people and had started building roads and bridges connecting various settlements within Hardin County.. In 1830, Nicholasville Post Office began operating out of what is now First Baptist Church (now Old courthouse). In 1840s-50s John Witherspoon built a sawmill south of downtown which provided much needed employment for locals during hard times following the Civil War including producing rails used by Union forces in their war effort; however mill closed after years of decline due primarily to lack of demand from increased traffic along Interstate 70 which bypassed town boundaries
Nicholasville was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Pike and James Dickson. It was named for General James Wilkinson, who served in the American Revolution. The city was incorporated in 1827. It became a small town after being Kosciusko County's only county seat from 1828 to 1840. In 1841, it became part of the newly created Union County. In 1851, Union County was abolished and Nicholasville became a part of Lawrence County.
