In 1812, Nicholasville became the capital of Kentucky after it was moved from Louisville. In 1815, the town passed away an act that authorized it to become a state capital if it met certain requirements including population growth and approval from both Houses of Congress. However, this did not happen until 1819 when Kentucky became a state andNicholasville lost its status as capital. In 1861, Nicholasville residents sided with Confederate States of America over Union forces during the American Civil War. After the war ended, many citizens left Nicholasville for new homes in nearby states such as Louisville and Nashville. In 1930, Nicholasville experienced another period of growth when two railroad companies decided to build tracks through their towns. This led to an increase in business activity which helped to preserve many old buildings and contribute to a more diverse cultural life in town than before. Since then, local businesses have enjoyed continued success and are now considered some of KY's most successful small businesses
