Nicholasville is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,669 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Frankfort–Davidson, KY–Montgomery, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Nicholasville was made on July 3, 1814 by John Nicholas and his family as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Nicholasville was named for Nicholas French who had become interested in the area during his travels through Kentucky in 1807-1808. In 1846, what is now Hardin County was included within Kentucky when that state was created from parts of three previous states: Virginia (Old West Virginia), Maryland (Eastern Shore), and Tennessee (Middle Tennessee). At that time there were only two counties in Kentucky: Hardin and Fayette. In 1847, James Lafferty bought land east of Nicholasville from Andrew Jackson for $500 and began to build a gristmill which became a large milling center for lumber production in Hardin County. The first post office at Nicholasville was established on November 12, 1847. Lumber production continued to be an important part of local economy until after World War II when other industries such as aluminum smelting replaced lumber as the primarystay of the town's economy. In 1814, the couple built a log cabin on the edge of the town and started farming their land. They also bought some land east of the town for themselves. In 1821, the couple married and moved into a larger house in the town. They remained in Nicholasville until their death in 1877. The first settlers in Nicholasville were farmers who grew corn, wheat, potatoes, beans, and other crops. After about twenty years of expansion, mining began to occur in nearby Loudoun County and demand for goods increased so much that new businesses cropped up such as stores, blacksmiths, boat builders, and teachers. By 1920-25 there were over forty businesses operating within the boundaries ofNicholsville alone! This growth led to an increase in population which reached its peak during World War II when over one thousand people lived within the limits ofNicholsville! However by 1946-50 poverty rates had decreased significantly while job opportunities had eroded due to technological advances which impacted many industries at once! Despite these challenges however economic stability has continued through several cycles of economic recession only recently interrupted by periodic booms! On January 1, 1907, Nicholasville incorporated as a city.
