The Nicholasville Naval Shipyard was founded in 1881 by Rear Admiral Alfred T. Nichols and later became the largest naval shipyard in the United States. The yard built more than 100 warships, including the USS Constitution (1897), USS Monitor (1905), and USS Lexington (1942). In 1970, the navy mothballed some of its older vessels at the yard. Today, the navy operates two large drydocks at the yard- one for submarines and one for destroyers- as well as a dozen other yards throughout Kentucky. Nicholasville is a town in Campbell County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,609 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first settlers in Nicholasville were two families from Maryland who came overland in a wagon train on November 26, 1814. They named their new settlement after Nicholas the Apostle, one of Jesus Christ's disciples and founder of Christianity in the Middle East. Nicholasville was platted on December 13, 1817 by John Pemberton and James Kenedy. It became a village on April 14, 1821 when it had a population of 100 people. On December 5, 1830, Nicholasville had 1,000 people and was incorporated as a town by an act of the state legislature. The first post office in Nicholasville was established on January 12th, 1824 with Wm Silliphant as its first postmaster. The letter "N" was added to indicate that this office was located at " Nicholassville." In 1852 the post office name changed to "Nicholsviile." This name remained until March 9th 1935 when it reverted back to its original name of "Nicholsvillee."
