Marine gift history in Owensboro, Kentucky goes back to the 1800s. The Owensboro Marina was first established in 1892 by Captain John Sidenheimer and his wife, Anna. It later became known as the Marine Annex and served as a harbor for vessels docking at the local dockyard. In 1915, Captains John W. Hixon and Lewis Kincaid donated land to the city of Owensboro for a marina and terminal used by local boatsmen. The current marina complex was built on this land in 1922-23. The City of Owensboro purchased the marine annex from Captain Hixon and Lewis Kincaid in 1978, retaining ownership of it until 1984 when it was sold to OSI Corporation for $10 million. The Marine Annex has been home to many different types of vessels throughout its years as a dockside attraction for locals and tourists alike. Some of these include sailboats, powerboats, fishing boats, amphibious vehicles and more! Notable visitors have included Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt (1939), Robert F Kennedy (1963) and Lyndon Johnson (1969). All three presidents were personally thanked by Mayor Joe Papp after disembarking their boat at the annex during their visits to town! Owensboro is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Owensboro is the county seat of Johnson County. The name "Owensboro" derives from the Shawnee word "yoh-ka-ni," meaning 'place of great oak trees.' One of the first Europeans to visit what is now Owensboro was James Owen, who named it after his home village of Youghal in Ireland. In 1784, General George Washington visited what is now Owensboro while on his way to Lexington and gave it its present name. One early settler in Owensboro was Johnathon Haysenhorn, who arrived in 1802 and built a log cabin on the current site of Main Street. He operated a wagon road between Owensboro and Lebanon for transportation of goods to and from Lebanon. A post office was established at Owensboro in 1819; it continued into operation until 1914. In 1830, John Denny founded the Denny family cotton gin near where Clay Road intersects Ulysses S Grant Boulevard today; this gin became one of America's leading producers of cottonseed oil (a key ingredient in cooking oil). Harry Fenton developed a new type of locomotive axle that made it possible for railroads to run through Johnson County; he also started marketing apples here as early as 1876. The first store here was opened by Wm., III., Kingman on Main Street in 1885; this store later moved to other locations within the town before closing its doors permanently in 1984. Today only two buildings remain standing from this original store: one located off Vine Street southwest corner with Beattie Drive, and another located on Main Street east side just past Second Avenue south border with American Legion Hall complex - all these buildings were demolished around 1990 when new development took place adjacent to these older structures.......Today there are few traces remaining from either John Denny or Harry Fenton's time here...... many people mistakenly think that both men died young during World War I – however that would not be accurate as John Denny actually passed away following surgery performed days before hostilities commenced…..After World War II many businesses closed due primarily to economic hardships……In 1951 local resident Bob Neyland organized a group called Citizens for Nuclear Education which campaigned against nuclear weapons testing then taking place nearby…..In 1957–58 construction began on Interstate 65 through Johnson County….the town fathers decided that they needed more than just a single business downtown so they constructed several large blocks northward facing Vine Street between Tenth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue……This district still remains active today as most residents work within walking distance outside their homes.........Today there are few if any traces remaining from eitherJohn Denny or Harry Fenton's time here......
