The Air Force deployed a gift to Winchester, Kentucky on December 3rd, 1941 in commemoration of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The gift was an airplane and its pilots. The plane was donated by Major General Carlos L. Higueras, Jr., former Commander of United States Forces in Europe and Commanding Officer, Ninth Tactical Air Force at RAF Bentwaters. It arrived in the town just four days after the attack occurred and quickly became a popular tourist attraction for locals and visitors alike. The planes were used for training purposes during World War II and proved their worth during the conflict by flying missions into Nazi-occupied Europe. After the war ended, they were stored at RAF Bentwaters until they were leased to the Air National Guard in 1957 as part of their Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association program. They continued to serve with distinction through membership in both organizations until 1991 when they were sold to a group of individuals who restored them to their original condition. Today, these Planes are still flown by members of the Air National Guard as part of their charitable outreach program known as "The Flying Legends."

Winchester is located on the Ohio River and has a riverfrontage of over two miles. Winchester was founded by white settlers in 1792 as a trading post on the falls of the Ohio River. During World War II, Winchester served as a main base for various American forces engaged in the war effort including ground troops, air forces, and naval vessels. After the war, many businesses closed down but some have been preserved such as US Steelville which still employs over 350 people today. Today Winchester offers its residents access to historical sites such as Stonehenge which is located just outside of town Limits; Little Rock Cemetery; Fort Donelson National Monument; Clarksburg Battlefield Museum; Mountaineer Inn; Lancaster Fortress National Historic Site; Frankfort Heritage Center & Market Place; and much more.

During World War II, American taxpayers funded some of the world’s largest air campaigns. TheAAF played an integral role in these engagements by providing aircraft, pilots and munitions for use by other members of NATO and other allies. Thanks to donations from individuals and businesses alike, many soldiers and civilians received items they may never have otherwise had access to. This gave rise to one ofairforce's most well-known traditions –Operation Greeting Card campaign. In recent years, Operation Greeting Card has become increasingly popular among civilians as well as military personnel around the world. For example, RAF Tornado GR4 bomber crews often take turns carrying out visits home on their return trip after operating over Europe or Asia; this is done in orderto drop offcards bearing picturesque scenes from their area over Great Britain (or any other country chosen by RAF commanders). Similarly, US Marine Corps Special Forces units sometimes deploy on operations such as “Bin Laden Hunt III” with specific objectives such as finding Osama bin Laden or raiding his hideout; cards are then distributed throughout areas surrounding Afghanistan before returning home with news about successes or failures within that location
