The Winchester Rifle Company was founded in 1871 by George Armstrong and Brothers. The company became one of the leading rifle manufacturers in the United States, manufacturing rifles such as the Winchester Model 1873 and Winchester Model 1886. In 1896, Winchester merged with Remington Arms Company to form Remington-Winchester Corporation. The company continued to make high-quality firearms until it ceased production in 1903.

Winchester, Kentucky is a city in and the county seat of Barnes County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 12,834 at the 2010 census. Winchester is part of the Louisville–Jefferson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to set foot in what is now Winchester were traders on the Ohio River. They named their new town after John Winchester, an Englishman who had been killed during the French and Indian War (1763-1768). The first buildings in town were built by traders and settlers who arrived between 1775 and 1780. By 1802, Winchester had a population of 1,500 residents. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson invaded Kentucky and captured Bardstown with little fighting; he abandoned all pretense of protecting Lexington and moved his headquarters to Winchester so that he could plan his invasion of Tennessee from there. In 1862 General Robert Ewell decided to move forces from Knoxville to relieve pressure on General Nathaniel Banks's army attacking Petersburg, Virginia; however, this move also generated hostility among some elements within Confederate Headquarters in Richmond because it was thought that Ewell would march through Alexandria instead which would have cut off Confederate supply lines from Richmond. A group of officers under Captain Arthur MacArthur refused orders to march south without orders from higher up and rallied behind General Robert Ewell when they learned of Confederate intentions. This event led to MacArthur being court-martialed for dereliction of duty; he was sentenceed with 10 months imprisonment followed by deportation back home to Cuba where he died years later as a result of complications from his wounds sustained during the skirmish at Alexandria. In 1865 Union troops burned down two cotton warehouses nearpresent-Winchester while fleeing pursuit by Confederate troopers commanded by Major Jubal Early; as a result local businesses lost most if not all their inventory or customers for several weeks afterwards. On November 11th 1861 Colonel David Glasscock organized Company K (Kilpatrick'smounted Riflemen) outfitted with arms provided by Dragoons' Armory at Lebanon Barracks east side street between Fourth & Fifth Streets His unit became known as "The Bankers" due its participation in actions against guerrilla forces operating west of Lebanon Barracks including one engagement where company commander Captain John Minton rode into action unsupported leading 500 guerrillas against 300 Federal troops under Brigadier General James Hays on October 30th 1863 After losing control over these rebels Captain Minton retired on horseback leaving commando force operational until relieved July 1865 By February 1865 Company K had 7 men left including Captains John Minton (Captaincy taken March 15th 1865), James Wofford (May 15th 1865), George Fenton(July 8th 1865) Samuel Pemberton (March 25th 1866) Enlisted Men: Abram Pope(Private), Isaac Norris(Private), Joseph Henshaw( Private), Daniel Boone III(private). Winchester was founded by Colonel John Winchester in 1796 as a trading post on the Ohio River. It grew rapidly due to its location, being an important stop along the road from Cincinnati to Louisville and other cities. In 1814, Winchester became part of the Union Territory of Kentucky under U.S. President James K. Polk and was renamed Fort Knox after General Andrew Johnson's executive order creating it in 1845. After the Civil War, Winchester declined with Reconstruction coming to an end; however, it regained most of its former prosperity thanks to its role as a munitions plant during World War I and II. The town has since experienced a resurgence with new development including several colleges and universities in addition to numerous retail stores and restaurants.
