It is bordered by Lake Ponchatoula on the east, Bayous de Thibault on the west, and Jefferson Parish to the south. The population of Houma was 711 at the 2010 census. The history of Houma goes back to 1804 when it was part of what is now Rapides Parish. In 1835, it became a part of New Orleans and remained that way until 1959 when it became an independent municipality. The first white person to live in Houma was James Hogg who arrived in 1836. After some time he sold his land to John Saginaw for $1,000 cash. The early settlers were mostly farmers with some land developers also living in Houma at this time.
