Kenner, Louisiana is a town located in Acadiana Parish, Louisiana. The population was 8,719 at the 2010 census. Kenner was founded in 1837 by Captain James Wilkinson and his wife Deborah. The town was named after Major General John C. Kenner who fought in the American Civil War. The first school in Kenner was built on the site of present day United Methodist Church. Father Jules Thibodeaux taught there for one year before leaving to open a school in Pineville. Father Thibodeaux's pupils were the first students to learn about arithmetic and geometry from Dr. Samuel Morse of New Orleans. In 1841, Captain Wilkinson donated land to build a courthouse and post office on South Elm Street near what is now Stateline Boulevard south of I-10 exit 9A (now Interstate 10). A courthouse and jail were built on these same blocks, with commercial development developing around them beginning in the 1850s. In 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell visited Kenner while attending a military parade through Baton Rouge and ordered all inhabitants be evacuated without warning or explanation; most of the men took off into the night without bothering to load their firearms or leave their homes At this point, most residents had fled northward following news that Union troops were advancing on Baton Rouge from Arkansas Territory under General Ulysses S Grant . Most returned home within two weeks when hostilities ended In 1865, following Reconstruction which ended slavery in America, Captain Wilkinson donated land to build an academy which became known as Southern University – now Tulane University . In 1907–08 construction began on Baptist Memorial Chapel , designed by famed architect Ebenezer Howard ; it opened in 1909 and remains one of Kenner's most popular attractions today On November 4th 1870,Captain James Wilkinson married Fannie Boudreaux at First Baptist Church where they raised their children until her death in 1915 . After she died he married again but this time he divorced her due to health concerns He remarried once more but this time he did not divorce her again because he felt she would have refused another marriage if it had been possible . He also had two daughters with his second wife Gertrude Hines whom he lived with until his death from leukemia at age 83 years old on October 3rd 1978
