They planted the first coffee bushes in what is now Mandeville. By 1840, Mandeville had become one of the leading ports for exporting coffee beans to Europe. Coffee prices began to decline around this time because of increasing competition from other crops such as cotton and corn. However, World War II (1939-1945) revived demand for coffee beans and has helped keep Mandeville afloat ever since. Today, Mandeville is an important center for coffee processing with many small businesses making their mark on the local economy. Mandeville is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,643 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Morin in 1798. He named it for his friend and mentor, Marcus Mandeville, author of "A Vindication of the Rights of Man". In 1806, Morin donated land to the town for a school and library. The first post office opened in 1807. In 1870, Maurice Demarest built a sawmill on the river near what is now Mandeville High School. The mill became one of the most important factors in helping to give Mandeville its nickname "The Mills of America". In 1925, General Electric began production at their plant east of downtown New Orleans on Elysian Fields Avenue. This large factory produced radios and other electronics equipment for American soldiers during World War II. After the war ended, GE moved its operations west to nearby Chalmette before finally closing its doors in 1984. Mandeville has experienced many changes over time; however, its history remains very significant to the community today. One example is that it was once required by law to have two blacksmiths per house; however, this requirement has been eliminated since 1957 when racial integration began taking place throughout much of Louisiana through court rulings and laws passed by then Governor Edwin Edwards%.
