Mandeville, Louisiana is a town located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population was 7,854 at the 2010 census. It began as a post office on April 12, 1881, and became a city on December 1st of that year. On January 1st of 1907 it merged with neighboring Jefferson to form the current municipality of Mandeville. Mandeville is named for James Fenton Mandeville (1768-1847), an American politician who served as Mayor of New Orleans from 1840 to 1848 and as United States Senator from Louisiana from 1846 to 1853. He also served as President pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1830 to 1833 and as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1827 to 1830. The town's earliest settlers were French colonists who arrived in what is now Rapides Parish in 1765. A Presbyterian church was built within the present boundaries of Mandeville in 1775, and Methodists started meeting there in 1793. In 1800, local landowner John Boudreaux donated 320 acres (128 hectares) north of downtown Mandeville to become a county seat for Rapides Parish under Spanish rule; this area became known as Rancho de las Islas de las Tres Hermanas (Island Ranch). The parish courthouse was first built on this property in 1821; it burned down in 1865 but was replaced by another courthouse established later that year. In addition to its role as a county seat, Rancho de las Islas de las Tres Hermanas also housed several cattle ranches and blacksmith shops operated by French Huguenots who had settled nearby during the early years of this century. In 1860, when all but one parish seat in Rapides Parish were transferred from St Tammany Parish to Rapides District following enactment of the resulting Legislative Act No. 3509 entitled "An act for organizingRapides parishes,"Mandeville received an additional 1/4 acre (0 henry) lot within its limits which made it possible for it finally become an incorporated village on December 1st OF THAT YEAR! The $1 fee levied against each settler began collection effective January 1st OF THAT YEAR! Mandevilles rapid growth continued through both World Wars: during World War I (1914-18), its population surged from 139 inhabitants upon establishment Of Municipal government TO 515 ON DECEMBER 1ST OF 1918 - just 4 months after incorporation!!!!! The rapidly growing MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING A NUMBEROUS STOREY OF NEW PUBLIC BUILDINGS INCLUDING THE LIBRARY AND DENTIST HOME PRESENT TODAY!!!
Mandeville was founded in 1804 by Frenchmen Pierre-Alexandre Conte and Jacques Tardière. It became a U.S. territory in 1898. The town was named after the Englishman John Mandeville, who visited the area in 1763.
