Slidell was founded in 1814 by Jean Lafitte and his wife Marie Lavette. Lafitte's father had been born in what is now Slidell, but moved to Baton Rouge early in his life so that he could study law with John Caddo. Lafitte's mother died when he was young and he was raised by his father and stepmother. He became a successful trader and entrepreneur before returning to Slidell to found the first cotton gin in Louisiana in 1824. By 1840, Slidell had become an important shipping point on the Mississippi River because of its natural harbor at Passchendaele Bayou. Lafitte's grandson Pierre Laclède organized a company to buy the disputed land west of New Orleans from Spanish colonists in 1803 and named it for him—Lafitte County—though little else is known about this period of Louisiana history. In 1804, Lafayette served as Governor of Louisiana under President James Kenedy and negotiated the Treaty of Paris ceding control over West Florida to Spain through which Spain surrendered all Claims north of Mexico City to the United States without any admission into force or compensation for Ulysses S. Grant’s acquisition thereof As part of this treaty, Spain ceded 2 million acres (8 km2) including present-day Slidell to America for $6 million plus interest payments over 10 years historians generally agree that it would have been much greater if not for a tiny bit of bad luck: At some point during negotiations, one American negotiator accidentally dropped a piece of wood on Spanish Minister Manuel de Ayala’s foot which led toAyala demanding two insteadof one million acres as originally agreed; this resulted-in grants totaling only 880 square miles (2 km2).
