Slidell is a town located in the parish of Slidell, Louisiana, United States. The population was 6,879 at the 2010 census. It lies within the Jefferson Parish seat of Slidell. In 1809, it was founded by French colonists as an agricultural community on a bayou called Saint John's River. The name "Slidell" comes from a local Native American word meaning "protected place." The first settler in Slidell were two men named Pierre and Jean Lafitte. They came to St. George Island in 1794 and founded a trading post there known as the Fort de la Rivière (Fort Rouge). The Lafitte brothers had come from France with their families to establish an offshore empire that would include parts of Texas and Louisiana. When they arrived in America, they named their new settlement after one of their earlier possessions—SaintJohn's River in Normandy—which meant "the good water" or "a place where water is available without being contaminated." In 1819, when Slidell incorporated as a town under French law, it became part of Jefferson Parish which included much of what is now Orleans Parish east of the Mississippi River. In 1830, when statehood was granted to Louisiana, Slidell became its capital city because Baton Rouge was then the only state capital without congressional representation. The growth of oil production during World War II caused employment opportunities for many people who shifted from agriculture to manufacturing during that time period - among them were several sons of Pierre Lafitte who led companies such as Gulf Oil and Shell Oil until their death in 1965 and 1978 respectively; Jules Ferry (1863-1946), governorgeneral from 1928-30; Ernest Bevin (1892-1964), minister for communications from 1944-46; Edwin Edwards (1868-1948), Ulysses S.
