Sulphur, Louisiana was once a thriving community with an active military. The Sulphur Arsenal was one of the most important munitions factories in the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1915, General John J. Pershing ordered the closure of this plant because of decreased production due to World War I. However, when America entered World War II, Sulphur recommenced production as part of the Army aluminum armaments program. Today, Sulphur is home to three branches of the Louisiana Army National Guard and two airfields used by both land-based and air-based units. The city also hosts annual events such as the Mississippi River Carnival and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival which showcase local music and culture.

The Sulphur Army National Guard was organized on December 8, 1917. The original battalion commander was Colonel John J. Sullivan. On January 1, 1918 the Sulphur Battalion of the Louisiana National Guard was constituted and Colonel James P. Welch became its first commanding officer. On April 9, 1918 the battalion moved to Chalmette and participated in the First World War draft service as part of Company D of the 5th Infantry Regiment (5IR). The battalion returned home in 1919 and reorganized into a regiment on December 1, 1919 with Colonel Harry A. Covington as its first colonel commanding it. In 1927 Colonel John Muehlenbach became colonel commandant and served until his retirement on November 30, 1931 with Lieutenant General Harry Sippy as his successor. In 1934 Lieutenant General Sippy retired from military service after 32 years of service with the United States Army and was replaced by Major General Claude Rainsworth who served until his death on July 20, 1946. On October 15, 1948 Brigadier General George Wirtz assumed command of the Sulphur Military District which included all rifle companies within Jackson Parish except for Company I which remained at Chalmette Barracks under Captain Julius Kappenheimer’s command pending disposal by company headquarters at Chalmette for use as a storage depot during war time hostilities declared against France following World War II; this action also affected Company F which had been stationed at Fort Polk since 1916 but remained inactive due to lack of orders from headquarters about moving it across parish boundaries to join other units or disbanding altogether because its drill instructor unit (Company L) had already been disbanded effective September 1st 1945 when that unit’s training facilities were transferred from Thibodaux to New Orleans] On October 15, 1948 Brigadier General George Wirtz assumed control of the Sulphur Military District which included all rifle companies within Jackson Parish except for Company I which remained at Chalmette Barracks under Captain Julius Kappenheimer’s command pending disposal by company headquarters at Chalmette for use as a storage depot during war time hostilities declared against France following World War II; this action also affected Company F which had been stationed at Fort Polk since 1916 but remained inactive due to lack of orders from headquarters about moving it across parish boundaries to join other units or disbanding altogether because its drill instructor unit (Company L) had already been dissolved effective September 1st 1945 when that unit’s training facilities were transferred from Thibodaux to New Orleans]
Sulphur is a small town located in the parish of Terrebonne, Louisiana, United States. It is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. The word "sulfur" comes from French meaning "white lead." Sulphur was named for Sir Humphrey Gilbert, 4th Baronet (1792-1864), a British army officer and statesman who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain during the 1830s. In 1836, Gilbert donated land to build a courthouse and school in Sulphur. The first post office in Sulphur was established on February 17, 1837. At that time there were only two households in town and mail delivery took two days to arrive because of the distance involved. In 1861, Sulphur became an incorporated village with a government made up of three trustees chosen by residents themselves - one for each ward within the municipality boundaries. On November 5, 1902, Sulphurelle Parish merged into Terrebonne Parish; however it continued to be governed by three trustees until 1934 when it became an unincorporated community under state law combined with Terrebonne Parish as its municipal government again elected by resident voters instead of trustees appointed by the parish government. The John Fenton Manufacturing Company was founded in 1898 just east of town on what is now Gulf Freeway Boulevard across from Catholic High School #1A. This company manufactured shoes--the popular type then worn both indoors and outdoors--for many years before being closed down due to bankruptcy in 1984 after producing over 1 million pairs of shoes annually employing fifty workers at their original plant site near Interstate 10 outside Lafayette LA). Today there are several small businesses active around this area that provide services such as painting/paintballing/golf/camping etc., all without having any contact with Fenton Shoes which ceased operations more than twenty years ago!

In 1892, General John Jellico introduced the first parcel system within the British Army, which allowed troops stationed abroad to receive parcels containing items such as clothing, foodstuff, and munitions. The system proved successful and was later replaced by envelopes in 1915. Today's soldier's mailbag is still full of goodies!

Sulphur, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. Sulphur is one of the oldest towns in Louisiana and has been around since 1805. The first settler in Sulphur was John Dooley. There were only four families living in Sulphur when it was founded and by 1810, the population had grown to twenty-one people. In 1835, Sulphur became a parish and on December 15 of that year, Elijah Cotton married Sarah Rankin and they founded what is now known as Rankin Cemetery. On July 10 of 1840, James Cotten bought three hundred acres of land southwest of downtown for $5 per acre. This area would become known as Cotton Field until it was purchased by the Sulpher Company in 1865 and renamed Gulf Coast Railroad Depot Street after its owner, Hernando de Soto y Gasset Sr., who also donated land for the depot. In 1845, General Zachary Taylor arrived in France during his military campaign against Mexico and upon his return he decided to make an expedition into New Orleans to take possession of all Mexican lands east of our river systems which included present day Jefferson Parish including Sulphur. As part of this campaign he ordered General Lafayette to march through our parish with 25,000 men but due to bad weather conditions they were forced to turn back near Prairie du Chien on November 3rd where they discovered an Indian village consisting mostly women and children who surrendered without any fighting occurring or damage done to their village by General Lafayette’s forces later that night while reports indicated no casualties occurred among these peaceful Indians despite cannon fire being unleashed from American forces nearbyELLIOT CONNECTION On October 15th 1862 Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest made an attack against Union Cavalry Regiment #3 under Colonel Abraham Lincoln at Pleasant Hill Farm outside Jacksonport LA Some time after this engagement Confederate Major General Robert E Lee came under pressure from Confederate President Jefferson Davis who told him there were 4500 more Union soldiers available if he attacked David Dixon’s Brigade under Brigadier General Samuel Pemberton rather than attacking Forrest’s smaller force numbering only 100 men from what we now know as Pulaski County VA Aftermath: 300 killed/missing; 400 captured; many buildings destroyed Confederacy lost about 8000 men total Casualties: Unknown
Sulphur was founded in 1785 by Frenchmen Pierre-Antoine Le Moyne and Jean-Baptiste Chouteau. It became a U.S. territory in 1803. In 1861, it became a state of Louisiana.
