Sulphur, Louisiana is a town located in the parish of Jefferson in southwestern Louisiana. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is named after Sulphur, an important port on the Mississippi River. The first European to visit Sulphur was Father José de Urquiza in 1698. A Jesuit mission established at Sulphur began operations in 1713 and by 1800, it had grown to include several hundred residents. In 1804, following the American Revolutionary War, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the burning of all Spanish possessions in Louisiana. The Jesuits were expelled from that state and their missions closed within two years; however, their successors continued to operate until 1821 when another French mission took over at Sulphur. The first permanent white settlers arrived as part of a fur-trading expedition led by Colonel Pierre Laclare in 1817; they numbered about seventy individuals and built a log cabin near what is now Market Street. In 1861, three additions were made to the town: adding a post office (1861), an Episcopal church (1863), and a school (1868). By 1870 there were 1,800 inhabitants residing in fifty-six businesses and one thousand nine hundred ninety-eight individual citizens. After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29th 2005, many people living outside of Tulane University's walls evacuated their homes for fear they would be destroyed if they remained behind; this forced many people within Tulane's boundaries either to leave or live with friends or family members who could not leave because of health concerns or other emergencies inside New Orleans proper. Many people also left Sulphur because it lacked any real infrastructure other than streets which resembled courses on golf courses with small potholes throughout them; these conditions led some residents to nickname her "The Ghost Town". When Katrina hit Sulphur she lost power for nearly eight hours due to damage from winds estimated up to 185 mph (300 km/h). She reopened briefly after dark but then lost power again for most of the night as gauges indicated high water levels around her precinct limits--much higher than expected given normal levels during such events—threatening even more loss of life if untreated sewage overflows into local waterways caused by flooding during rains that week leading up to Katrina’s landfall eastern shores including Baton Rouge eastward past Shreveport into inland East Baton Rouge Parish including parts of Lake Charles) On September 3rd Governor Kathleen Blanco declared an emergency order suspending social services statewide effective immediately while state officials conducted damage assessments along Iberville Parish lines perpendicular thereto affecting areas situated between Lafitte Pointe Park extending northeasterly thence through St Tammany Parish boundary line easterly thence across Plaquemines Parish boundary lineTo assess whether additional evacuations are needed please contact your local public works department consisting Mayor Pro Tem
Sulphur, Louisiana was named for Sulphur Springs in central Texas. The town of Sulphur was founded by Frenchmen in 1812 as a post on the Red River. It grew rapidly as a result of the opening of the Trans-Mississippi Railroad and other transportation improvements. By 1836, Sulphur had become a small town with a population of about 230 people. The town experienced rapid growth during the 1840s and 1850s when new manufacturing and ranching interests emerged in the area. In 1851, Sulphur became an enlarged city with a population of 1,500 people. The city grew rapidly due to its importance as a center for trade and commerce. By 1870, Sulphur had reached its peak as an industrial center with more than 100 businesses operating in various sectors. However, during the late 19th century, economic decline began to take hold in Sulphur despite efforts by city officials to revive it. In 1930, Sulphur was merged into New Orleans through annexation and renamed Normandie Avenue after then-Mayor Averell Harriman's wife Norma Jean Harriman (1908-2004).
