Zachary AFB was first opened in 1951 as an air force base for pilots training for conversion to jets. At this time, it was one of only a few USAF bases in Louisiana. The base grew rapidly during the Cold War era and by 1960 had become an important hub for bomber training operations across Southeast Texas and Oklahoma City area. In 1971, parts of Zachary were transferred to Dyess AFB TX for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm; this marked what would be known as “the Rancho Base Years” at Zachary AFB because much of our research and development activity took place here during those years (e.g., MQ-9s). In 1991-1992, as part of Operation Joint Endeavor/Operation Neptune Spear, many Vietnamese citizens living near Duc Phuoc city were rounded up by U.S./Vietnamese military forces and taken into custody by American troops; this event is also commonly referred to as Operation Newsom Canyon or simply “Nicanor” after then-Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger (R). At that time, Zac AB was the only USAF base in Louisiana open on a full-time basis during peacetime; however Dyess AFB closed its doors permanently later that year due to budgetary restrictions regarding military personnel numbers at USAF installations (Flt Lt John Aitken currently serves at Dyess) . The decommissioning process for both Dyess AFB & Zac AB began almost immediately following their closure – essentially means they were deactivated but not really retired until their physical separation occurred! This was actually pretty common during those days because active duty USAF units typically transitioned out within two years after commissioning otherwise they would remain activated through retirement or reactivation status! The Air Force gift history in Zachary, Louisiana began with the establishment of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron at Bagdad Field on December 1, 1942. On May 1, 1945HQ and HHC squadron were transferred to Drew Air Force Base. HQ and HHC squadron relocated back to Zachary AFB on October 11, 1945. On November 10, 1948 HQ and HHC squadron moved again when Headquarters A&C Wing was activated at Zachary AFB. The wing was inactivated on March 14, 1949 when Headquarters USAF was established at Wright-Patterson AFB. On July 17, 1951 HQ and HHC squadron moved when the 5th Bombardment Wing was activated at Zachary AFB. The wing operated from here until its inactivation on September 15, 1955 due to budget cuts within the USAF.
Zachary, Louisiana is a small town in the southeastern corner of Louisiana. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Alexandria-Thurston Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General John Zachary, who fought in the American Revolution and died in 1794. Zachary's Creek flows through the town. Zachary began as a small logging settlement on an open plain near Uptown Lake in 1839. By 1870, it had grown to include a school and three churches. The first post office opened in 1872. Zachary experienced some growth during World War II when many coastal towns were bombed by Nazi Germany and its allies. craftsmen took up residence in Zachary after the war ended, creating new industries such as boatbuilding and carpentry; these days, there are only a few businesses left that use those old techniques. In recent years, much has changed for Zachary: most recently, it became known as one of the most vibrant places to live in central Louisiana due to its quality of life and lack of expensive suburbs; moreover, its proximity to both New Orleans and Lafayette makes it an ideal place for commuters heading into either city or for weekend getaways with family or friends close by

Zachary, Louisiana is a town located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It was named after Zachary Taylor, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and the Spanish-American War. The population of Zachary was 581 at the 2010 census. The history of Zachary goes back to 1824 when French Canadians founded what is now known as Zachary Townships on the east bank of the Iberian River. In 1829, six men from this town formed a company called the "Spanish Ring" to provide protection for settlers on their new plantation land west of Baton Rouge. In 1834, these settlers petitioned Congress for land grants that would include portions of present day Zachary Parish and Grant County. On January 10, 1835, General John Cushing laid out a road (later numbered US 71) through what is now downtown Zachary and established Fort Zablocki on its current site to protect these settlers from Apache Indian raids. In 1840, fortifications were built along both banks of the Iberian River to defend against any future Indian attacks; however, no attack took place until 1845 when over 20 Apache Indians raided Fort Zablocki and killed 11 people including three children. This event led to increased security around this outpost and led to its name being changed from "Fort Zablocki" to "Zachry" in 1850 in honor of General Taylor's victory over these raiders at that location two years earlier. In 1861 during Confederate forces' attempt to cross into America through Arkansas along US 66 they were met by Union troops under General Robert E Lee at Battle Creek Bridge near present day Lafayetteville; this battle resulted in more than 1,500 Confederate casualties with Union forces taking control of all but about halfof Arkansas before withdrawing towards Memphis following successful negotiations resulting in Lincoln's inauguration as Ulysses S. Grant's first Secretary of War four days later; thus starting what would become one Of America's longest wars - lasting until 1865 when Mexico finally Recognized America's victory over slavery). This battle also marked beginning of an era where African Americans began entering into white society throughout most Of America - eventually leading to civil rights movements such as those waged by Dr Martin Luther King Jr.; which continue even today! In 1862 two cannons were donated by Governor Claiborne Pell (then serving as CommandantGeneral New Orleans District) for use by Confederate forces during their failed siege against Harper's Ferry; these cannons remain among Louisiana historical assets still standing today within city limits! In 1865 Vicksburg became one side’s final stronghold prior To surrendering On April 9th...thus ending The Civil War In Mississippi!
