The Maine Air National Guard's 5th Airlift Wing presents the annual Air Force Christmas gift to Bangor, Maine. This is a tradition that began in 1939 when the wing's predecessor, the 1st Bombardment Wing, presented a military trophy or gift to Bangor Mayor George C. Hales for his support of the United States air forces during World War II. The present year's gifts are made from materials donated by local businesses and individuals. This year's recipient is Bangor-based Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) field station chief James Riddle. In 2013 Riddle was given an installation at Governors Island in New York City as part of Operation Neptune Spear, which aimed to suppress Iranian nuclear weapons programs. In addition to giving presentations and presenting gifts, the 5th Airlift Wing sponsors a variety of events throughout the year that promote good will between the military and civilian communities in southeastern Maine. These events include caroling at Ft Monmouth on December 15th and 16th; Army/Navy football games on December 17th and 18th; Stampede Parade on January 2nd; Big Game Berries Day on January 3rd; Midsomer Murders day on February 17th;Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on February 19th;and annually brings together members of both branches of service for eggnog drawing competitions (Eggnog Derby).

TheBangor Daily News reported in October of 2018 that the Bangor Air National Guard District 5 detachment, composed of 18 F-15E Strike Eagles and five E-3C Sentries, donated four F-16Cs to the Maine Air National Guard. The donation was made during a ceremony at the Bangor Airport. In November of 2018, it was announced that the Maine Air National Guard had received its first F-16C from the Bangor Air National Guard detachment. The aircraft arrived in Bangor on December 3rd and is being used for training by theunit.

It is still in use today and has been involved in many missions throughout its career. 2) Boeing 747-8J/89 – This plane was gifted to the USAF in 1992 as a replacement for their aging 747s. 3) AH-64 Apache Helicopter – This helicopter was gifted to the USAF in 2002 as a replacements for their ageing AH-6 helicopters. 4) F-15 Eagle Fighter Jet – This fighter jet was gifted to the USAF in 2006 as a replacements for their ageing F4E fighters. 5) B2 Bomber – This bomber was donated to the USAF by Boeing in 2007 as a replacement for their retired 707 bombers. 6) KC-135 Stratotanker Aircraft – These aircraft were gifted to the USAF by Lockheed Martin in 2009 as an replacements for their ageing RCN transports. 7) E3 Sentry AWACS Aircraft – These aircraft were donated to the FAA by Boeing in 2013 as replacements for their ageing ECAS radars. 8) C-5 Galaxy Airlift Aircraft – This aircraft was donated to NASA by Boeing in 2015 as a replacement for their ageing DCA transport planes
