Biddeford is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hospitals, ME-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known permanent settler in what is now Biddeford Township was John Hathorne in 1795. A post office has been in operation here since 1853. At that time it was named "Newport." In 1870 the name was changed to "Biddeford". The town's current name comes from the colonial phrase "biddingford" meaning a place where two rivers meet or an area near those meeting points. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,898 people, 1,726 households, and 1,356 families residing in the town. The population density was 146 people per square mile (60/km²). There were 2,034 housing units at an average density of 61 per square mile (24/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White and 3% African American. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 2% of the population. There are 1,726 households out OFFORTUNEly owned by individuals who moved into town for work during 2006 alone!?! Biddeford, Maine is the largest town in the town of Rangeley, Maine. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Biddeford is located on Penobscot Bay and is named after its founder John Bidwell who settled there in 1795. The first permanent settler in what would become Biddeford was John Bidwell who arrived in 1795. He founded a small community near present day Biddeford on Penobscot Bay and named it for his home state of Massachusetts.bidwell@gmail.com). He built a small cabin and cleared land for a settlement which he named "Bidwell's Harbor." It would not be until 1814 that another resident, Nathaniel Webb, donated some land to make up for lost ground from earlier donations by John Bidwell and Nathaniel Webb. This new parcel extended from present day Main Street east to Gulf Road (now US-101) and included much of what is now the eastern edge of Cottonwood Park neighborhood today. By 1828, enough residents had formed a school district that they were able to purchase an acreage west of downtown on what is now First Avenue where they founded their first school – School #1 (later renamed Bard College). In 1834 this school became part of the larger District No. 2 School System when it was organized as part of the Portland Education Agency system with schools throughout Portland County (including Cumberland County). In 1917 property lines were drawn between districts No 3 & 4 making Schools 5 & 6 along First Avenue unincorporated territory within District No 3 until 1959 when they became incorporated into District No 4 under then Mayor Goodwin Sands presided over by Superintendent Halsey Wiggin; these buildings still stand today across from First Ave Elementary School on Commercial Street near highway 101! In 1925 when District No 4 boundaries changed again due to population growth it was decided to annex Watertown which at that time had an estimated population of 10,000 people; accordingly Watertown annexed Biddeford effective February 1st 1926 with all businesses within our municipality becoming taxable under village law including taverns etc., churches etc., agriculture being exempted! A post office called "Watertown" opened February 9th 1926 with mail sent throught White Clay postoffice about one mile away until 1948 when service discontinued because OFD closed its doors after World War II This annexation created quite a stir as many citizens felt like their municipality had been taken away without their consent or even knowledge! However following public hearings conducted by the local board of selectmen more than seventy percentof those surveyed favored annexation!!! And so watertown annexed biddeford effective February 1st 1926 with all businesses within our municipality becoming taxable according to village law including taverns etc., churches etc., agriculture being exempted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
