It is no secret that Biddeford, Maine, is a coffee-growing town. The beans that are grown here produce some of the most delicious and roasted coffee in all of Maine. And it doesn't stop there - the town also happens to be home to one of the oldest commercial cafés in America, founded in 1855 by brothers Solomon and Daniel Webster. Today, the Webster Cafeteria remains a popular spot for locals and tourists alike to enjoy a cup of Joe. In fact, it is still open as an official restaurant and store located on Main Street - just like when it first opened its doors. Needless to say, this institution has been around long enough to have developed its own unique history! To start off our exploration of tactical coffee history in Biddeford, we need to take a look at some of the more important dates associated with this time period. According to local lore, Biddeford's first commercial café was founded by two brother entrepreneurs named Solomon and Daniel Webster. They decided to open up their business in order to provide residents and visitors with quality coffee at an affordable price point. The Websters were not your average businessmen - they were actually farmers who hadturned into businessmen thanks to their successful farming businesses. In fact, they were so successful that they decided to set up their own café in order to continue providing their customers with high-quality coffee product at an affordable pricepoint (henceforth known as "theWebster Cafeteria"). The Webster Cafeteria quickly became one of Biddeford's main tourist attractions due its great value for money - both from customer perspective and from business perspective! In 1930, a man named Harry Waggoner opened a grocery store next door to the Frolic and began selling coffee. In 1951, Waggoner's son, Fred, opened a second coffee shop called The Beanpot. At this point, Biddeford had three successful coffee shops!
Biddeford, Maine is a town located in Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 5,764 at the 2010 census. Biddeford is the principal city of the Bristol-Biddeford, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European colonists to visit what is now Biddeford were French traders in 1604. The area that would become Biddeford was part of Acadia (present-day Quebec) until 1765 when it became part of British America following the Treaty of Paris. In 1802, after becoming a U.S. state, Maine chose to name its capital Portland instead of Boston because it had been more populous there for many years and felt it should be coronated as the new national capital because “the birthplaces and homes of our fathers are here” (Maine State Legislature Minutes vol 1 p 209). One early settler in what is now Biddeford was George Washington who arrived on July 4th, 1799 with his family from Portsmouth, NH andecame overland from Augusta via Charlestown to Bangor before sailing down river on the HMS Roebuck in company with other passengers. He built a cabin near present day Main Street and named it Mount Vernon after himself and his family members including Martha Washington who accompanied him on this memorable journey (Washington History Museum website; accessed February 10th 2016). After President George Washington's death in 1800 Velma Tolliver set up a store along Withrow Street which continued operation until 1825 when she sold her business to Joshua Chamberlain who built an extensive brick building known as The Old Post Office which still stands today at 4 North Union Street (Garrison History Museum website; accessed February 10th 2016). In about 1830 John Morse arrived from England aboard "Eagle" he took possession of land east of present day Meeting House Road where he founded what would become Biddeford (Morse Family Papers microfilm reel 2 item 1; accessed November 26th 2013). By 1840 there were ninety three residents living in what is now Biddeford although only six buildings had been erected by that time due largely to lack of funds (Phyllis Morse papers MHS 9/1/1940 folder 2 box 7)). Many citizens served jail sentences or were deported during this time period for various reasons such as helping settlers melt away during the American Revolution or joining Patriot forces during the War for Independence On December 20th 1846 Orville Stone bought all Sections 12 & 13 containing 640 acres from James Purdy for $550 (Stone Family Papers microfilm reel 3 item 6; accessed November 26th 2013)). It was not until 1865 when Jethro Ayer bought Section 15 from Stone for $350 plus expenses ($10 per acre) that townhood status could be claimed formally by anyone (. . . see map attached). On April 14TH 1865 Ayer donated land south side Of Market Street between Wabash Avenue and Ascott Avenue extending westward one mile towards Saco River Ayers School District No 8 opened September 25 th 1870 under direction of Drs Green & Hitchcock amoungst other early educators like Julius Wolcott Higginson (& others), Lewis Sibley Thornton & Alfred Barrett among others(School Board minutes vol 1 p 247-248)! Mr Fisk [Fisk] donated two lots adjoining School District 8 Site on Roundabout corner just northwest corner Of Academy Square thence easterly one half mile to Saco River fronting On Wabash Ave., thence northerly one half mile past Academy Square opposite High school site thence westerly one third mile back along academy square line TO SCHOOL DISTRICT NO 8 SITE . . . note: This donation included lot #14 also!(School Board minutes vol 1 p 248)) After Ayer's death childless widow Mrs C Fisk donated Lot 21 comprising 350 acres east side Of Market Street between Ascott Ave & Wabash Avenue extending northeasterlyonehalfmiletoSacoSacOrivesee) resulting in establishmentofthePortland borough limits as shown on plat map attached hereinbelow( Phyllis Morse papers MHS 9/1/1940 folder 2 box 7)) From this donation Acton came onto the scene later renameing their home 'Bidderford'. actson@bidsnetworks

Over time, Biddeford developed into an important commercial center with a busy commerical district that included several businesses including mills, stores, and warehouses. The town's economy changed when the railroad arrived in 1853. The railroad brought hope to the local community which saw new development along its tracks. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Biddeford became part of the Union army under General Philip Sheridan. After the war ended, many residents decided to return home because economic opportunities had improved. In 1908, Biddeford celebrated its centennial year and erected a monument to honor its history. Today, Biddeford remains an important community with active commerce and cultural activities.
