Lewiston is a small town in the heart of Maine, and its coffee history dates back to at least the 1840s. The first coffeehouses in Lewiston were located on the downtown square, and they served both local residents and visitors alike. In 1851, one of Lewiston’s most famous entrepreneurs, Amos Eaton, opened the Eaton Coffee House. Eaton was a prominent merchant and philanthropist who was also well-known for his innovative methods of coffee brewing. His establishment became a popular tourist destination throughout the mid-19th century. The second wave of coffeehouses in Lewiston began appearance in the early 20th century. These establishments were often smaller than Eaton’s predecessor, but their focus was on providing quality coffee products to their customers rather than catering to tourists or businesses. By 1925, there were already several dozen specialty coffee shops operating in Lewiston County. Many of these establishments had been started by independent retailers or entrepreneurs who saw an opportunity to offer high-quality beans and services at a lower price point than traditional cafes. During World War II, many Lewiston residents turned to coffee as a way to support their local economy. This increased demand for quality beans led some merchants to establish cooperatives that grew out of necessity during wartime times. By 1945, there were over 50 different cooperative bean roasters operating in Lewiston County alone! Through this process, we have come into contact with some of the world’s most unique coffees from various parts of the globe – something that has made our town such an important node in espresso history!

The growth of caffeine in green beans started with Spanish farmers growing cedar trees that yielded fruit that could be dried and then roasted for use as espresso beans. European traders also interested in acquiring Indonesian-grown coffee found that this type of bean had a higher content of caffeine than other types of beans, so they began buying large quantities of these beans to use as morning drinks across different parts of the world. Coffee cultivation resumed on Java island after World War II when it became available again due to its lack of oil production

The town continued to grow during the 19th century, with new businesses and homes being erected along Main Street. During World War II, Lewiston played an important role as a munitions plant and post-war boomtown. After the war, development slowed until the early 21st century when renewed growth brought new businesses and residences to town. Today, Lewiston is home to a number of cultural attractions including both historical museums and theaters.
