Lewiston is a small town in central Maine, United States. The population was 1,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lewiston-Auburn-Emmetsburg Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1872 when settlers arrived from Maine and New Hampshire. The first post office was established in 1875. By 1907, the population had grown to 2,000 residents. In 1969, Lewiston became the first town in Maine to be made entirely self-governing through a process known as "government by consent." The next year, the town voted to annex nearby Auburn to form a single municipality with a total population of over 4,000 residents. Lewiston, Maine is a town located in eastern Maine and is the county seat of Penobscot County. The population was 9,698 at the 2010 census, growing to 10,811 at the 2013 estimate. Lewiston was founded in 1849 by Captain James Caldwell and his family. The town's first store was built on Main Street in 1851. It was followed by a millinery shop, a post office and a school in 1860. In 1865, Lewiston became the site of the only railroad station in Maine. The towns current downtown area formed when two blocks of Main Street were destroyed by fire in 1916 while being used as an ammunition depot for World War I troops training in nearby Auburn. A new downtown began to be constructed on what remained of Main Street in 1926 after lumber companies moved their factories out of town during the Great Depression. Lewiston's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its founding until more recent times when it has become an important center for manufacturing including textiles, plastics and other products exported to Canada and Europe. Some local businesses have continued to operate even as they have left Lewiston behind; such as Jockey’s Pharmacy which still operates from one corner of Main Street where it operated from 1922-2001; The Golden Corral restaurant which continues to serve cerviche tacos nightly since 1951; and The McKnight Inn which operated from 1923-1986 before moving into its current location on Depot Street adjacent to First Baptist Church until it closed its doors due to economic difficulties in 2009. Lewiston also offers many cultural attractions including: Bangor Shakespeare Festival performances every summer at Bangor Civic Center; Mount Desert Island Museum with its collection of coastal artifacts dating back over 100 years; Androscoggin Art Gallery with rotating exhibits featuring traditional art drawn from all over New England.; Lewiston Dark Ages Museum open seasonally late July through early October displaying items representative of life under Danish rule during that time period.; Pioneer Village open year-round features activity designed specifically for children ages 0-18th century settlers who lived among their own people along the Kennebec River.; The Old Subway building located east side Interstate 95 just south of town provides interesting displays about American fast food culture between 1955-2005.; Asbestos museum open seasonally late May through earlyOctober exhibiting items related to asbestos use throughout history.-
