The Waterville, Maine Coast Guard District was established on July 1, 1903. The original mission of the Coast Guard was to protect the coast and its people from any potential hazards posed by vessels or persons in violation of state law or regulations. In 1916, the Coast Guard acquired a ship called HMCS Windsor which served as the first vessel used for patrols along the Maine coastline. In 1922, a new building was erected at Waterville Point on Sebago Lake to serve as headquarters for the Coastal Guardsmen of Maine. The following year saw another addition to the station when HMCS Prince George became available. This boat equipped with an observation tower and radar system helped identify vessels violating fishing regulations off of Maine's coast. On October 1, 1942, while stationed at Waterville Point, Inc., an American submarine USS Scorpion surfaced just offshore and began operating under Japanese Navy control until surrendered two days later. That same year saw also Operation Neptune's Spear which involved Allied forces invading Japan and liberating many concentration camps in that country including Auschwitz-Birkenau where more than one million Jews were murdered during World War II. As part of this campaign, Coast Guard personnel played a critical role in rescuing large numbers of prisoners from various ships sunk along Japan's coastline during Operation Crossroads. In 1957, Headquarters moved from Sebago Lake to Thetford Mines after it was damaged by fire. In 1966 A Constellation-class oceanographic research vessel belonging to United States Fisheries Service (USFWS) came into service with Coast Guard resources assisting USFWS operations off of Maine’s coast in support of fish stock assessments conducted pursuant to Magnuson Fishery Conservation Act (MCA). From 1974 through 1978 Headquarters relocated again when it fell victim to arson within Station premises; however damage caused by worms not being controlled prior to move did not meet criteria for restoration approval and remained closed until 1984 when all facilities were replaced with modern technology allowing continuous operation without loss or interruption due Commercial fishermen using access Granted wide variety food web life extension Upgraded diesel engines 1971 thru1985

The Waterville Coast Guard Station was authorized on December 17, 1903. The station was established as a lighthouse and weather station on the east side of Sebago Lake. The first commanding officer was Capt. John H. Graves who served from 1903-1905. On March 4, 1907, the Waterville Coast Guard Station became a barracks when it moved from its original location on the west side of Sebago Lake to its present site on the east side of the lake. In 1912, Capt. Augustus Fenton assumed command of the station and continued in that position until his retirement in 1916. In 1916, Maj.-Gen Wm Halsey took command of the coast guard station and continued in that position until his death in 1921. Then Lt.-Col Charles Ayer took command and held that position until 1924 when he also retired from service with the coast guard station at age 60 years old). AfterLt.-Col Ayer's retirement, Commanding Officer (CO) George Ladd took over as CO for 1 year before retiring at age 70 years old). On October 14, 1928, Capt. Geo Withers assumed command of the Waterville Coast Guard Station effective October 15th after Maj.-Gen Wm Halsey's death which left Col. Charles Ayer as acting CO for brief period prior to Lt.-Col Ayer's appointment as permanent CO effective November 16th 1928 which he held until his own promotion to Major General on May 2nd 1931 which made him Permanent Commander effective June 3rd 1931). Waterville, Maine is a small town located in Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. Waterville is the county seat of Penobscot County. The current mayor of Waterville is Bill Fenton. The town was founded in 1824 by Captain Amos Seward and his family as a post office on the east side of the Saco River. It became an incorporated town in 1865 and had a population of 621 when it lost its charter to become an unincorporated town in 1903. Waterville has been served by the same school district since 1889 and by its own police department since 1906. The town's economy is based on agricultural production, manufacturing, transportation, and tourism.
