Waterville, Maine is a town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Maine. The population was 1,788 at the 2000 census and 2,028 at the 2010 census. Waterville is one of two towns in Cumberland County that are both unincorporated communities. The other is Bangor. The first settler in Waterville was James Webber who built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1824. A post office called Webber was established in 1825, and remained in operation until 1840. The community name came from John Winthrop's letter to his nephew Samuel Chase written while he was governor of Massachusetts (1801-1804). In 1828, Webber married Rachel Page and they moved to what is now North Avenue in Waterville. They had six children: James, Johnathan (John), Sarah (Sarah), Elisha (Elisha), Timothy (Timothy), and Reuben. In 1830, Alfred Hitchcock moved to Waterville from Canada with his family and began operations as an undertaker here under the name Hitchcock & Company which became Hitchcock Funeral Home after he left businessman Alfred Hitchock for larger profits in 1937 In 1836, Reverend Levi Sibley arrived from New England with his wife Emmaline to preach the gospel among the Native Americans living around Waterville Creek where they founded their own church which still exists today In 1839–40 Samuel Morse set up shop as a printer here along with others such as Elijah White who did much work improving communication methods through printing press technology during this time The first schoolteacher here was Lydia Cook who taught classes starting on September 9th, 1840; she continued teaching until her death on October 30th 1840 On July 27th 1861, Waterville passed into statehood as a part of Augusta County when it split off from Maine’s original Colony During its early years there were only about fifty people living here including twenty-five men and thirty-five women residents working together behind pioneer stores such as Hogg’s Store operated by Mrs Purdy alongwith Nathaniel Perkins store run by Nellie Perkins . There were also two private schools open for students between grade levels but these closed within 5 years due to lack of pupils or funding . By 1870 most businesses had closed down including Hogg’s store along with all but three homes/apartments inside town limits .
