Waterville is a small town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bangor–South Portland–Emmonsburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waterville is on the western edge of the town of South Portland and south of the town of Easton. The area now known as Waterville was first settled by Salmon and French settlers in 1795. In 1802, Waterville was made a town by an act of the Maine General Court. The name "Waterville" comes from a Native American word meaning "place where there are many willows." In 1838, Philo Farnsworth erected a furniture factory here which lasted until 1851 when it closed because of competition from cheaper manufactured items from abroad. One reason for its demise may have been that Waterville lacked manufacturing capabilities to compete with larger towns in New England such as Boston or Worcester. In 1870, all five thousand residents in Waterville were asked to move to South Portland so that their town could be annexed into that municipality. The request for relocation came about because along with other municipalities during this time period (including Belfast and Auburn), South Portland had come under attack by militias led by Captain John Pitcairn for lacking proper militia protection and having too much commercial activity within its limits. In 1902, while still living in Oregon Hill, then located on present-day Main Street in Waterville, my father-in-law built his first home - an egg carton type house - on what would become his front porch today! His neighbors did not take kindly to this new development; old timers often recall hearing stories about how one day someone managed to get inside through one of the large windows located just above ground level – right below where we sit today! For years after he moved back home permanently we Practical Jokers entertained ourselves by filling up egg cartons with live rats (and other small animals) and putting them out front onto our property – watching them run around like crazy! Over time some people even began using live mice as food sources; however I shudder to think about it now days! Needless to say our days as practical jokers ended shortly thereafter when we discovered just how dangerous it can be to put live animals outside without prior warning!! Our current property layout has more than enough room inside for everyone without any need for rodents…….. thankfully 😉 Today'swaterville Residents enjoy access to all local amenities including: shopping at various local businesses such as Walmart & Target; dining at numerous restaurants including Red lobster & Bistro L’Assiette; playing golf at nearby Augusta National Golf Club or White Sands Municipal Golf Course; taking walks throughout vibrant downtown which includes several unique shops & galleries/live music events every weeknight night!!!
