The Annapolis Garrison was the initial American military installation in Maryland. It was founded on December 12, 1795 by General John Forbes, who led the capture of Yorktown and became the first Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army. The garrison served as a base of operations for U.S. forces during the War of 1812 and as a nucleus for later military installations throughout Maryland. In 1814, after the Battle of Mill Springs, General Andrew Jackson ordered that allmilitary personnel be withdrawn from Annapolis and sent south to Fort Monroe in Virginia. The garrison remained inactive until its reactivation in 1861 following the American Civil War. In 1865, it was decommissioned and converted into a barracks complex known as Fort McHenry Park. In 1938 it was transferred to civilian control and is now used as an academic center by nearby University ofMaryland students
