Annapolis is a city in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The population was 71,713 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous municipality in Anne Arundel county after its namesake, Annapolis City (the largest municipality). Annapolis was founded by Gov. John Smith in 1821 as a small trading post on the western edge of what is now downtown Annapolis. At that time it consisted of just a few houses and a store. By 1830 the town had grown sufficiently to be annexed by Baltimore. However, Annapolis remained largely unincorporated until 1795, when it became part of the newly formed County of Prince George's following the creation of Maryland as an independent country. The first permanent home for settlers in present-day Annapolis was built on land that would become known as "Queen's Neck" because it held much valuable waterfront property adjacent to Catonsville Creek and Harford River (later called Patuxent River). In 1686, Sir Charles Calvert granted 256 acres (120 ha) along Patuxent River to William Stone and John Nicholson for use as "a plantation for white men only." The area around Queen's Neck would become one of the most prosperous areas in Baltimore due to its location near two major waterways and its easy access to transportation via boat or horseback. In 1795, following the end of King George II's American Revolution and consequent abolition of Lord Baltimore's proprietary government within Maryland, General John Armstrong moved his headquarters from Mount Vernon to Annapolis under then-Governor Isaac McKean so that he could lead military operations against revolutionary forces operating within Maryland outside of Philadelphia proper. This new situation created tensions between local officials in Prince George's County and those located within Baltimore due to persisting claims over control over Stonington Harbor—one of three important entrance points into Chesapeake Bay for shipping entering/exit from Virginia during this period—and various other privileges enjoyed by Baltimores Residents including exemption from paying taxes AND free access to all public grounds insideBaltimore City limits save for those reserved exclusively for residents withinBaltimore Township Limits!
