The United States Coast Guard was established on May 15, 1790. The Coast Guard is one of the oldest and most important law enforcement agencies in the United States. The service has played a critical role in keeping our country safe since its inception. Today, the Coast Guard operates over 1,200 vessels and helicopters across 34 states and Puerto Rico. It employs more than 4,000 people who serve in a variety of positions including captain, lieutenant colonel, master chief petty officer, search and rescue swimmer/parachute jumper/landing craft operator/lifeguards. The Coast Guard has been instrumental in various holiday traditions around Baltimore including Santa's Workshop which takes place annually at Freeport Boat Launch located on Johns Hopkins Bayfront campus; Christmas Tree lighting; New Year's Eve Celebration at Harbor East Community Center; carnival games at Midtown Village mall) In addition to its many traditional functions within our community it also provides law enforcement services such as providing security for events like the annual Freddie Gray funeral procession or hosting special operations patrols during hostage negotiations.
