The Baltimore Navy Yard was founded in 1814 as the Harbor Defense Reserve Fleet. It became the Naval Construction and Repair Yard in 1916, then the Naval Ammunition Depot in 1929. On July 1, 1954, it became part of the U.S. Navy as the Baltimore Naval Shipyard. The yard produced nuclear-powered warships and submarines from World War II to the present day; it also built jet engines for U.S. naval vessels and helicopters for civilian use. In 2007, it was merged into the Pentagon's based shipbuilding complex, known as MARAD (Maryland Assembly Annex). In 1814, when Baltimore was founded by Caton Downe and others as a port on Maryland's Eastern Shore, its citizens subscribed $5 per annum to maintain a navy dockyard at which they could build their own warships or repair those of other states' navies. This Dockyard did not become operational until 1826 because of financial problems caused by an overspending on construction projects authorized by state legislators who were not properly reimbursed for their expenses (the "state fund" problem). The first ship built at this new dockyard was USS Constitution under contract with private interests: Captain George Washington ordered her built without consulting his government colleagues—a breach of military protocol that led to his impeachment proceedings five years later! The first national academy training program for officers corps members took place at Baltimore in 1829; future presidents James K Polk and Franklin D Roosevelt attended its classes there that year too! Unfortunately forBaltimoreians eager to participate in such illustrious academies (and doubtless responsible for much mischief along with them), these sessions were highly publicized affairs open only to select few! In 1861, Confederate forces burned down part of what is now called President John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum after occupying it during the American Civil War occupation of Maryland; fortunately no lives were lost inside! In 1865–68 another fire destroyed most of downtown Baltimore due to arson by disaffected sailors or soldiers who had taken refuge aboard ships anchored there; however this time no one was injured! By 1870s much damage had been done both within and outside city limits due to war production efforts; nevertheless several large warehouses remained standing until they caught fire again in 1904 while being used as storage sheds for munitions needed for World War I hostilitieslord America entered into conflict with Spain over control of Cuba—an event subsequent historians have characterized variously as a deepening recession leading up to world war I or America's entry into World War I on April 4th, 1917 On September 17th 1914 Frigate HMS Hogue departed Norfolk England boundfor Marseilles France after completing Sweeping exercises off British coast Shepway 9 days earlier accompaning 5 destroyers HMS Orion Sheffield , Aberdeen Glasgow Harwich Clyde Warspite Dundee Drayton Liverpool After rounding Cape St Vincent she sailed thence South Eastwards through Strait Of Gibraltar reaching Barcelona Spain laden with stores provisions uniforms prisoners etc She arrived safely at Marseilles France October 15th 1914 behind schedule but well pleased her Captains accomplished their task Drake Bay patrolled North West Atlantic during winter months keeping watch on Spanish shipping steamers running between Cadiz Spain loadings coal oil etc before sailing back home November 25th At Halifax Nova Scotia Oct 28 1914 orders came from London Commander Majestic[3] Commodore [4] flagship[5] Colborne went ahead escorted convoy Princess Elizabeth arriving November 30th 1915 very early morning assisted by destroyer HMS Cumberbatch icebreaker[6] fitted out towpath about entrance harbor mouth good night anchorage Place de la Victoire opposite Lighthouse.[7][8][9][10] From here scuttled two small boats loaded with explosives near moorings witch detonated causing huge explosion resulting loss of life including many men below water surface none more than 8 feet deep prior explodeer pulled cable stopped vessel immediately Successfully blew up all seams netting preventing any possible future accidents happened whilst underway leavingnone knows how many seamen died insideHMS Hogue [11],[12],[13],[14],[15],[16],[17], HMS Cumberbatch [18], HMCS Ontario [19], HMCS Grampian [20], SS Amazonia [21], SS Brasilien {22},SS Troilus {23}. During 1915-1920s additional frigates/destroyers Civillian Type RDF(Grendel) converted tot he anti submarine warfare role also moored here - note RDF stands for River Defence Forces’ type{24} following decommissioning Rescued By RNLI Hampshire frigate Dolphin February 1968 Defective machinery removed late 1970s re-fitted Asahi Maru No 3 salvage boat operated here until scrapped 1980 It wasn't just merchant ships that received assistance from the navy during wartime: landlocked states such as Delaware also received shipyards help during times of crisis (see Wilmington Delaware Maritime History website). To date there are four major naval yards located in Maryland: Annapolis Naval Shipyard (1814-1954), Camden Yards (1955-2007), Boston Navy Yard (1845-1970), and Yorktown Operations Facility (1974-2007).
