The Army National Guard of Cambridge, Maryland has been a part of the United States military for over 150 years. The guard is made up of soldiers and officers from all branches of the service. The unit was first organized in 1855 as Company A, 2nd Battalion, Maryland Volunteer Infantry. In 1951, the battalion was redesignated as Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry. In 1960, Company D was formed and replaced Company C in the guard. From its inception until today, company C has always been responsible for providing security for the University of Cambridge and other local establishments. The Guard's history can be traced back to 1855 when two companies were created from survivors of the Battle of Monmouth Heights on Long Island. These companies were later renamed as Company A and B after their respective states (Maryland and Virginia). On July 21st that year, these two companies commander Captain John Gregg called out his men to assemble at Fort George Washington to take part in a defense against an attack by General David Dixon Howe Jr.. 2 weeks later they again assembled at Fort Washington under Captain Gregg but this time they faced another attack by Howe which resulted in three dead and five wounded men on December 12th. Following this victory Gregg ordered his men to disband because he estimated it would be more beneficial for them if they regrouped closer to home where they could train better. However some units did re-form including Company C which disbanded on January 8th 1861 due to lack of volunteers (the army only had about 16 battalions at that point). The 1st Battalion 5th Regiment re-formed February 14th 1861 with Captains Edwin Ladd (Captain) and Wm Hinson (2nd Lieutenant) leading it but soon went on furlough again due to orders from President Abraham Lincoln who wanted troops available for service in Texas during the American Civil War instead On April 9th 1861 Companies A & B both reported for duty at Fortress Monroe where they were assignedguard duty around Norfolk Naval Shipyard before being transferred back home permanently on May 3rd 1861 along with most of their equipment including artillery pieces which had been brought over from Hampton Roads Arsenal near Richmond VA days earlier. After arriving back home they garrisoned various positions around Columbia MD until September when they finally left for Texas where they joined Confederate forces immediately afterwards

Cambridge, Maryland is a city in central Maryland and the county seat of Prince George's County. Located on the Potomac River, Cambridge is bordered by Anne Arundel County to the south, Carroll County to the east, and Frederick County to the north. The population was 47,609 at the 2010 census. It is one of two cities in Prince George's County (the other being Hyattsville), and it was founded as a trading post called "Newstead" on January 10, 1753 by Captain John Smith. The name "Cambridge" comes from an observation made by British explorer James Cook while traversing along the riverbank: "When we passed through this town IObserved that there were several Colleges in it; but I am not sure whether they are still there." From its inception until 1881, Cambridge was part of Series D of Baltimore City government which included most of what is now Anne Arundel and Carroll Counties. In 1881, following creation of Baltimore City as an independent city under Mayor James K. Biddle, Cambridge became its own municipality with a vote by residents over City Council opposition. Today much of downtown Cambridge remains unchanged from when it first opened up as a market town in 1800-01 - including such iconic attractions as King's Chapel (founded in 1698), Harvard University (founded 171), and Girard College (18th century predecessor to Johns Hopkins University). One notable exception has been recent construction around Fenway Park - consisting largely of high-density housing developments adjacent to baseball’s world-famous ballpark that have created significant traffic congestion within walking distance of both park attractions and local restaurants/bars/stores
