The first European settlers in Cambridge, Maryland were Englishmen who arrived in 1686. The area that is now Cambridge was part of the colonial Potomac River Valley and was settled by English and German colonists. The first white inhabitants of Cambridge were farmers who engaged in agriculture and hunting and gathering. In 1749, British troops burned down the village of White Marsh to punish the people for supporting the French during the Seven Years' War. The destruction of White Marsh left a lasting impression on the community and helped spur development at that location. In 1814, Congress granted Cambridge an incorporation as a town under the name "Cambridge". Development continued apace with businesses such as grocery store, tannery, brick kiln, flour mill, sawmill, ferry service and more starting up to meet rising demand from residents and tourists alike. By 1852, whenCambridge became a city it had reached its peak population with over 100 residents. However, despite steady growth during this time period there were also some challenges faced by city leaders including increasing traffic congestion which caused stress on infrastructure; high taxes which impacted businesses; lack of affordable housing; social unrest unrelated to economic issues; difficulties obtaining fire insurance; etc.; all of which contributed to Cambridge's decline during the late 19th century. In 1898, what is now called "Central Square" was completed as one of several central business districts (CBDs) created in response to advances in transportation methods and new legislation giving cities greater control over their local economies. Central Square served as a hub for commercial activity within Cambridge while other CBDs utilized similar functions within their respective neighborhoods or villages. By 1920 Central Square had become an important cultural destination with numerous restaurants and nightlife options available nearby for locals and visitors alike. However due to continuous suburbanization throughout much of Maryland through waves of migration from Northeastern cities into rural areas during this time period Central Square experienced significant declines in popularity amongResidentsand Touristsduringthe 20thcentury]. During World War II many soldiers stationed at Camp Kilmer formed what is now known as "The Hilltop Boys" who used their homes on Park Heights Avenue near Central Square for storage purposes until they could be moved into safer quarters nearer Boston University campus where they awaited discharge proceedings paperwork . At approximately 7:00pm on Sunday October 15 1957 two small fires occurred just feet away from where Camp Kilmer once stood making it difficult firefighters even got close enoughto put out either blaze but they did manage to extinguish another smaller fire that started behind one of these barracks
