It is the largest town in Prince George's County and one of the most populous towns in Maryland. The first settlers in what is now Easton were farmers who came from Pennsylvania in the early 18th century. They built their homes on small farms around Sleepy Hill Creek and started to grow crops. In 1786, John Dickinson developed a dam across the stream that created Easton Lake. The area became known as "Dickinson's Landing." In 1814, General James Knyfe moved his army from Yorktown through Easton to defeat Robert Ehrlich and his Mexican force at Battle of Brandywine near present-day Bowie Junction. This event made Easton an honors township within Prince George's County. When Congress passed the Organic Act of 1871 which established Baltimore City as a municipality, Easton voted against joining it because it felt that its location would be less advantageous than other municipalities within the new city limits. However, afterBaltimore City was incorporated into Washington D.C., Easton voted to become part of it on April 15, 1896 becoming one of its four wards (along with Owings Mills Township/Montgomery County), making it one of Eastern Districts' most populous wards today[7]. On October 25th 1910 voters approved incorporation as a city by referendum with 3,812 votes yes and 993 no; this formed what is now called "Eastern District" within Montgomery County government[8]. On November 4th 1916 Mayor J H Cope certified final plat for proposed annexation by Washington D.C., effective December 1st 1916[9]. On January 2nd 1920 Census there were 3362 residents living in 499 lots within 6 square miles - this was then 5 times larger than any town east of Philadelphia or west of New York City!
