Gaithersburg is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 26,724 at the 2010 census. Gaithersburg is known as "The University City" due to its location within the University of Maryland system and its many research institutions. Gaithersburg is home to the main campus of the University ofMaryland System, as well as two other campuses in Bowie and Silver Spring. It also has several buildings used by other universities within the MD state system: St Francis' College in Parkville and Eastern Mennonite University in Upper Potomac. Gaithersburg was first settled by Germans in 1773 and became a town on July 1, 1871. It was renamed after General Robert E. Lee after his surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Gaithersburg was once a major center for education for African Americans. Many Tuskegee Airmen were educated here during World War II and afterwards; many are buried here including NFL players Marvin Harrison and James Laurinaitis (the son of Jackie) among others. In addition, three African American mayors have been elected from Gaithersburg: Edwin Meese III (1981-1987), John F Kennedy (1961-1963), and Martin O'Malley (2007-2015). The black community has always played an important role in Gaithersburg - there are now more than 100 black business owners in town according to 2006 estimates

Gaithersburg, Maryland is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 453 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. Gaithersburg was founded by Welsh immigrants in 1784 and was named after General John Gaither, who fought in the American Revolution. The first settler on what is now Gaithersburg was James Foley, who arrived with his family in 1784. Foley's father had been born in Northampton Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania and settled there in 1759. James Foley moved to Gaithersburg about two years later and began trading goods with local farmers. In 1787 he married Mary Hinson and they started a family that would live here until 1865 when Mary died unexpectedly at age 48; their son James followed her death four years later. The first organized school in Gaithersburg was opened on November 12, 1824 by Revs John Auldridge and Dr William Cullen as Mount Zion Academy for Girls. This school operated for one year before being closed due to financial troubles. However, this did not stop others from starting schools within a short period of time- on December 5th of that year Samuel Colt offered Rs 10 per week to anyone who could start a school teaching children reading and writing English as an additional subject (this offer continued through 1828). At this point the community had no formal schooling but many people were able to get their education through private tutors or home schooling programs which continued until well into the 19th century. In 1834 Samuel Colt built a small log cabin near present day downtown Gaithersburg which became his headquarters during the early days of his business ventures; he also used it as his office while he maintained control over both Harper's Ferry Ferry (now Freedom Hall) and Winchester (later Smithfield Market). After Samuels death in 1836 his widow Deborah leased Harpers Ferry from him for five years during which time she ran the ferry service between Harper's Ferry and Winchester three times daily supplemented by another trip every other day between Winchester and Baltimore for passengers coming downriver from those two cities respectively.. After Deborah’s death in 1840 she bequeathed Harpers Ferry to her nephew Ezra Sturgis Gibbs Jr., who kept it running until 1957 when it closed down due to damage caused by Hurricane Lee; however Gibbs reopened it briefly before closing it again six months later due to fire following several unrelated incidents at the property including one where Gibbs' daughter Ashrafieowned some land adjacent to Harpers Ferry that saw frequent use by unauthorized individuals operating as "firemen" tryingto put out fires that never resulted in any damage or loss; this particular incident led Governor Richard Muckleberry to order all state agencies not allow any property located adjacent thereto - includingHarper's Ferry- ever again to be used for unlicensed activities .
