Each time an army unit or detachment arrived here they left behind their own souvenir bagel shop – called a barracks store – complete with uniforms and accessories worn while on assignment(pictured right). Gaithersburg, Maryland is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 24,721 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of Gaithersburg-Arlington County and the county seat of Montgomery County. Gaithersburg is named after General James George Gaither (1763–1837) who fought in the American Revolution and then served as a U.S. Congressman from 1795 to 1801 and again from 1807 to 1811. The first settler in what became Gaithersburg was Stephen Fenton in 1792. He built a house on land bought from John Talbot for $1 per acre (0.50 hectares). The first store opened in 1796 by Elias Beall at 8 Nunn Road (now First Street), just east of present day Interstate 95 south of Gaithersburg Township boundaries. In 1800, John Chapman built a log cabin near present day Northwest corner of Southwest Boulevard and Northeast Highway on land that he donated to the community for use as a schoolhouse and cemetery; this location is now known as Chapman Heights Cemetery. By 1814 there were six stores, two churches and one school in operation within the town limits; however, growth slowed down due to lack of transportation or other opportunities for independence until the late 19th century when railroads arrived in central America which created new markets for agriculture products and greater access to markets outside of Pennsylvania and Virginia
