Gaithersburg, Maryland is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,871 at the 2010 census. Gaithersburg is the largest municipality in Montgomery County and the economic center of the county. It is bordered by Rockville to the east and west, Silver Spring to the north and south, Bowie to the west and southeast, and Takoma Park to the southwest. The first European explorers reached this area in 1634 when John Smith stumbled upon what he thought was an Indian village on which he built his own shelter before wintering out. A year later Captain James Clark visited this site while exploring part of what would become Maryland. Clark's journal entry for October 3rd 1707 gives us a glimpse into Gaithersburg's early days: "On Saturday we arriv'd at a great Village called Gwynearburgh where we pitched our tents for several nights...There were about twentie men appertaininge unto these people who met us with all sorts of Sails [...] We found them very friendly." In 1727-28 George Washington explored these lands as part of his survey for a new road between Georgetown and Baltimore. He named one stretch of this road Prospect Road after his friend Colonel John Forbes (1702-1776), who had accompanied him on that trip. In 1821 Gaithersburg became one of twenty towns in Montgomery County when it was organized from parts of two other counties following special legislation enacted by President James K. Polk Sr..
