The first coffee shop in Hagerstown was established in 1866 by John McCracken. The business continued to operate until 1924. In 1934, the first micro-breweries were opened in Maryland. These breweries began producing small quantities of their own coffee for sale at local convenience stores and restaurants. By the late 1990s, the number of small microbreweries had declined significantly, but some continue to exist today.
Hagerstown is a town in western Maryland, United States. The population was 11,671 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Frederick County. The first permanent settlers in what is now Hagerstown were Quakers who arrived in 1777 from Northampton County, Pennsylvania. They built a gristmill on the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, naming it "Hagerstown Mills". The mill was destroyed by fire in 1827 but its ruins still stand today as part of Hagerstown Park. In 1881, John Denny founded the Dennys grocery store and restaurant which remains open to this day. In 1907, Hagerstown became an incorporated city and has since grown into one of America's most prosperous small towns. Hagerstown is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is the county seat of Prince George's County and home to Hagerstown College. The population was 12,569 at the 2010 census. Hagerstown is one of the oldest settlements in the Eastern United States and has been settled by humans for over 10,000 years. The town was first documented as "Hefferstown" in 1563 on land that now forms part of Frederick County. In 1792, Sir Walter Scott named his estate Hefferstown after General James Hegeron who led British forces during the American Revolutionary War. In 1827, John Smeaton became the first white settler in what is now Prince George's County when he arrived from Delaware along with his family on horseback. The town began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location between Frederick and Washington counties and its accessibility to transportation such as roads and railroads. By 1830, Hagerstown had a population of 1,200 people and it rapidly became an important center for trade within Maryland and Pennsylvania. By 1840, Hagerstown had reached 5,000 people and it continued to grow until it peaked at 11,500 people in 1860. However, this growth slowed down due to factors such as increased competition from other towns in Prince George's County and difficulty getting enough workers onto farms because of low wages common at that time. During World War I (1914-18), many residents worked on munitions plants near Carrollton because those were considered essential for war production; however most residents returned home before hostilities ended two years later. Afterward many businesses closed down or relocated away from wartime pressures which led to a decline in population; however some new businesses cropped up such as a grocery store opening up in 1925 which helped revive the economy then fall victim to economic recession throughout much of the late 20th century). In 1970s & 80s there was huge movement of people out into suburbs due high school graduation rates & lack of jobs so they could buy homes without having children - causing loss of community values
