Hagerstown is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,830 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince George's County. The name Hagerstown is derived from John Hager and his family, who settled in the area in 1795. The first settler in what is now Hagerstown was James Purdy. He and his wife Margaret built a log cabin on what is now First Street in 1807. In 1820, Isaac Nolen bought 640 acres (247 hectares) of land from John Lowry for $1,000. He named it "Hagerstown" after himself and donated it to the town for development purposes. In 1851, Frederick Douglass moved to Hagerstown from Baltimore with his wife Anna Jones Douglass and their three children to start a new life as black Americans in an unknown corner of America. They called their new community "Harlem." However, when Frederick Douglass' brother Charles came to visit him later that year he found out that Harlems had been disbanded because there were no black people living there! In 1865, Abraham Lincoln made a speech here denouncing slavery which caused great upheaval across Maryland due to its impact on African Americans then living here. Many blacks left Haggerstown for Northern cities such as Philadelphia orBaltimore following this address but many others stayed behind and formed what became known as "The Ghetto". This period saw great transformation for the town - although some residents did leave during Reconstruction because they could not live with white people while remaining enslaved
The town of Hagerstown was founded in 1821 by Colonel John R. Hager, who bought land from the Potomac Company. The first courthouse was built in 1824 and the first school was opened in 1827. In 1840, Hagerstown became a city and the name was changed to Fredericktown. It reverted to Hagerstown on January 1, 1907.
