Hagerstown is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 20,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Ft. Worth metropolitan area. Hagerstown is located on the Potomac River and its namesake Colonel John Hagerty founded it in 1814 as a small settlement on a bend in the river. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans and other crops. In 1848, Hagerstown became the capital of Prince George's County when Congress moved from Fredericktown to Baltimore after the American Revolution. The city was renamed for General James Hagerty (1786-1852), who had helped lead British forces against American troops during the War of 1812 and later served as Ulysses S. Grant's second in command at Fort Monroe before becoming Ulysses S. Grant's first secretary of war in 1853. John Fenton built his home near what is now downtown Hagerstown in 1840; he became one of the largest landowners in town and donated land for a courthouse and school district which soon included several hundred acres (100 hectares) around present-day downtown Hagerstown. He also developed large tracts of land along both sides of the Potomac River where he built housing developments that remain some of today's most popular tourist destinations due to their colonial Revival architecture and landscape features dating back to that time period such as extensive canal systems and man-made waterways used by travelers during this period In 1870, General Philip Sheridan invaded Maryland with Confederate forces intent on overthrowing Ulysses S. Grant's Union government following their victory at Appomattox Court House over Union soldiers led by Major General Robert Ewell Beauregard – an event known as "the Battle of Antietam". After days of skirmishing near modern day Battlefield Park southeast of town, Sheridan ordered all civilians within five miles (8 km) east thereof must leave or face bombardment; this order caused much destruction within what are now northwest suburban neighborhoods now called Byersbrook Park while leaving older areas such as Gwynns Falls untouched Aftermath: More than 60 percent civilian casualties including women and children Hagerstown quickly emerged as one of Confederate decision-makers due to its strategic location – just two miles south east from Fredericksburg on Route 7 where supplies could be brought upriver for use by Confederates besieging President Abraham Lincoln outside that city Haggerstown residents sided with Confederate general Stonewall Jackson over President Lincoln because they saw him as weak against Sherman In 1865, after Jefferson Davis' defeat at Vicksburg, Confederate president Jefferson Davis surrendered Montgomery to Union forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest – an event which initiated Reconstruction Era efforts led by Secretary Seward to reintegrate African Americans into white society following slavery

It is the second-largest city in the state of Maryland after Baltimore and the third-largest town in Prince George's County after Alexandria and Frederick. Hagerstown was founded by John Nicholson in 1792 as a small farming community called West Point on the Potomac River. It became an important military installation during America's Revolutionary War and then declined during the 19th century as its population shrank to a few hundred people. In 1871, it was merged with neighboring Cumberland to form what is now known as Hagerstown–Cumberland County. In 1970, Hagerstown was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its "historic significance" for its architecture and engineering feats such as Fort Myer and Stonehenge railway station.
