The first coffee shop in Hagerstown was founded in 1875. The shop was called the Grist Mill and served roasted coffee beans. In 1916, the shop moved to its present location and began serving espresso. In 1937, the shop became a coffee roaster and continues to serve that function today.

Hagerstown is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the north bank of the Potomac River and takes its name from General James Hager, who fought in the American Civil War. The population was 14,547 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what would become Hagerstown arrived around 1700. By 1800, there were few buildings standing and most of the residents consisted of farmers and traders. In 1814, General James Hager led an army against Fort McHenry as part of a larger Confederate attack on Baltimore. He was killed in action. After his death, many settlers followed his precedent and named their townships after generals or other celebrities such as Ulysses S. Grant or Philip Sheridan—a practice that continued until well into the 20th century. In 1881, Hagerstown became an incorporated town with a population of 25 residents when it merged with nearby Fredericktown. The merger was done because both towns had been suffering from low birthrates due to limited opportunities for education for their citizens; Fredericktown had no high school while Hagerstown did not have any agricultural businesses suitable for industrialization so it merged with another small town hoping to increase its population by attracting more jobs in light of impending railroad construction across the Potomac River downstream (the railroads would eventually come to dominate largely rural Maryland). Hagerstown experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location on Route 70 between Washington D.C., Northern Virginia and Norfolk Va.—two major military areas at that time—and its status as a primary manufacturing center for munitions production during wartime years (1939-1945). The town of Hagerstown, located in the middle of Maryland, was founded in 1792. The area that is now Hagerstown was first inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Potomac Indian tribe. In 1802, the United States acquired control of what is now Maryland from Spain and made it an official US territory. The town of Hagerstown was established as a small community on the east side of the Potomac River. By 1824, it had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad. After the Civil War ended in 1865, many soldiers who had fought for the Confederacy moved to Hagerstown and began businesses here. The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction and experienced a period of prosperity between 1870 and 1880. However, during this time there were also several outbreaks of violence and poverty that caused much stress within the community. In 1893, George Washington Carver arrived in Hagerstown and started a large agricultural company here. Since then, Hagerstown has been home to some high-profile entrepreneurs such as Andy Warhol and Dick Clark Jr.

Hagerstown was founded in 1795 by Captain John Hager and his wife, Abigail. It became a part of the Maryland colony in 1801. The city's first courthouse was built in 1814. Hagerstown's most famous resident was George Washington Carver, who grew up here and is credited with developing the so-called "Carver diet."
