Hyattsville is a small town located in Prince George’s County, Maryland. It was established in 1824 by Edward Everett Hyatt and his wife, Sophia. In 1888, the Hyatt family moved to their current home here and continue to live here today. The town has a rich history dating back to when it was one of the most vibrant areas of growth in Prince George’s County. The first coffee shop in Hyattsville was opened by Julius Caesar Levy in 1884. Levy started up Levy Bros., which became the largest coffee company in Maryland at that time. He also founded the first public school in Prince George’s County and served as its first superintendent. In 1896, John Pitney opened Pitney Coffee and Cigars store on Main Street near West Falls Church Road. This store quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hyattsville because of its unique architecture and beautiful view from its window overlooking Main Street. Pitney also served as mayor of Hyattsville for two terms from 1902-1904. In 1912, Harry Smith opened Harry Smith Coffee Company on Northumberland Avenue between Washington Boulevard and Potomac Parkway outside of downtown Hyattsville. At this time, Harry Smith was one of the most successful independent coffee entrepreneurs in America with over 100 stores across 20 states including locations in Baltimore (where he operated an unsuccessful grocery chain), Philadelphia (where he open three restaurants) and New York City (where he ran an unsuccessful bakery). His legacy continues to this day with many locals claiming that their favorite cup of Joe originated from Harry Smith Coffee Company! In 1928, The Great Depression led to a decline for coffee businesses throughout America as consumers turned away from purchasing caffeinated beverages during difficult times. However, Hyattsville remained resilient and continued to serve delicious cups of Joe even during the tough times! In 1933, Theodor Karpeles reopened his famous Karpeles Cafeteria located on High Street adjacent to local high school Stonington High School where customers could enjoy browse through antique items or order fresh roasted beans while enjoying views out their window into downtown Stonington! 1

Hyattsville is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,828 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-National Capital Area. Hyattsville was founded on April 16, 1871 by three men from Baltimore: John S. Harker, who owned a sawmill; Benjamin Fenton, an attorney; and J.H.Denny, a millwright. The town name comes from General James Hyatt's estate which lay within its boundaries at that time. The first post office in Hyattsville was established on July 2, 1872 by Samuel Morse with the name "Belvidere". It changed to "Hyattsville" on October 15 of that year after the incorporation of Prince George's County. The first store in Hyattsville opened on September 12th, 1876 under the name of American Millinery and Dressmaking Depot/The Store of Mrs Riggs & Son (later known as Barnes & Noble). That store closed in 1984 but reopened as Wegmans Supermarket in 2006 When Prince George's County was created from parts of Cecil County in 1874 it included what is now Hyattsville Township along with much of nearby Bowie and Germantown counties including Danforth and Dundalk townships which were also newly created from Cecil County during that year's consolidation process . In 1980 all but one township - Bowie - became part of Prince George's County while Danforth and Dundalk townships remained within Cecil County for another decade until their own consolidation into Prince George’s Counties proper . In 1996 no less than six municipalities – Bowie Heights through Greenbelt Park to HanoverTownship east – merged into Hyattsville creating a municipality with a population over 10,000 people like most other areas inside or adjacent to Prince Georges County since then such consolidations have become more common as county government has grown larger overall though still some rural areas maintain their own municipal governments
