Laurel, Maryland is a city located in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 66,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore metropolitan area. Laurel was named after General John Laurens and his wife Mary Magdalene Laurel. The first permanent settler in what would become Laurel was Capt. Benjamin Banneker who founded an estate on Calvert's Landing in 1784. He and his family were the first white people to live in present-day Laurel and they set up a small farm here until 1814 when they sold their holdings to James Kieft for $8,000 dollars. In 1827 J.D. Pratt purchased land east of Baltimore from Banneker and began developing it into what became known as "Pratt's Mills" which included mills for making flour, cloth, paper and soap; today it remains one of the largest post-industrial complexes in the country with over 150 businesses employing over 3000 people directly or indirectly. Shields & Company built a large factory on Oliver Street between 1795 and 1800 which produced rifles for America’s Revolutionary War effort by casting iron hoops from cannonballs shot downrange from Fort Mifflin across Lake Erie to be used as projectiles by gunsmiths ashore at Yorktown etc.; this enterprise led directly to development of modern manufacturing technology within our community – something that we take for granted today! It wasn't until 1876 that saw production begin on what would become known as "the Star Factory" – later becoming home to Ford Motor Company before being demolished in 1967 (and its site now occupied by Weyerhaeuser). In 1850 Samuel Morse established Columbia Telephone Company here with original equipment still extant inside current day Verizon Wireless Headquarters Building; this company played an important role early telephone Pioneers like Edwin Armstrong who developed early Caller ID techniques while working out of this building! It was during these times that "Laurel" took shape as a distinctly English townhome enclave characterized by many fine Georgian Revival style homes dating back to about 1840 including several now listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Brookside Plantation (later deeded to Queen Anne′s University), Park Place (now home of Johns Hopkins Medicine) etcetera – all fashioned around tight streetscapes replete with well-manicured gardens edged by mature trees lining quietiver streets leading up meeting houses or into deep Botanical Gardens where elegant ladies loitered among azaleas or huge laburnums! Coffee became an important commodity in Spain during the 16th century and soon spread to other parts of Europe. By the end of the 18th century, coffee had become known throughout much of North America and was being traded as far away as China. In 1795, Boston merchants bought a small plantation called Roanoke Island from its owner for £10/tonne of coffee. At this point, roasting and shipping coffee began to be done by sea rather than land because it was more difficult to transport large amounts of drugs or goods over long distances. By 1825, coffee had reached London and was being traded under the name "Java" due to its similarity to Java (Istanbul). Coffee started becoming popular in America during the 1830s when advertisements appeared in newspapers promoting its benefits such as improved eyesight and a clearheaded state. Unfortunately, there were also many problems with growing coffee: high prices caused farmers to lose their money; pests destroyed crops; water shortages caused crop failures; and disease killed off many plants

In 1820, the town was granted a charter from Prince George's County and became an incorporated municipality with a population of three hundred people. In 1829, the town again gained a charter from Prince George's County and became an incorporated municipality with a population of five hundred people. During World War II, many military personnel were stationed in and around Laurel; it is home to one of the largest concentration areas for American troops in Western Maryland. The community experienced economic hardships during the Great Recession; however, it has seen some revitalization over the past decade through various events and initiatives such as art appreciation week and community wide recycling initiative
