New Carrollton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 24,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area. New Carrollton is named after Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French explorer who arrived in 1774 and explored what is now Prince George's County. New Carrollton was first settled by English colonists in 1666 as part of Cecil Township. In 1821, it became part of Frederick County and was renamed New Carrollton after Colonel Jameson Moore Covington (1785–1868), one of the first American soldiers to die in the War for Independence. In 1881, New Carrollton became an independent township and was named for General James Kapp Campbell (1812–1892). General Campbell wanted to show support for Britain during the Spanish–American War and donated land to be developed into a town. The town plat was filed on July 1, 1881, and construction began on what would eventually become known as "Campbelltown". On November 3rd, 1886, New York Governor John D'Arcy Wicker signed a proclamation annexing Prince George's County to Maryland; this event helped spur development around Campbeltown such as new shopping centers and homes being built near High Street along with other businesses that would soon sprout up like banks, hotels and restaurants serving local residents including Chinese immigrants working in nearby Chinatowns. The original core of present-day Campbelltown still remains with its small streets grid patterned perpendicular to each other with large lots facing towards High Street – all indicative of how early settlers planned their community based off their farmstead layout which rotated crops back-and-forth between fields/yards/ gardens etc., similar to today’s model townsplanning process used by municipalities across North America which often follows straight blocks similar to those found in England or France where every block contains one or two houses side by side on opposite sides of a main street or thoroughfare - this type of layout persisted until much later when subdivision began appearing throughout outside urban areas - however unlike modern subdivisions which are typically built upon roads & intersections rather than individual blocks within residential neighborhoods these rural village style settlements were not subject to zoning regulations like single family homes & condos have since come about thru neighborhood associations formed over time designed primarily & originally meant limited parking provision only allowing people living there access onto schools & public services such as playgrounds etc., whereas these days single family residences can often be found surrounding churches & school systems providing ample street parking ubiquitous today but once again reflecting how suburban life gradually moved out from rural villages into larger cities during the 20th century continuing until more recently mainline suburbs have slowly redeveloped back into small villages) Today’s $27 million Main Library building opened its doors on October 5th 2006 adjacent to St Andrews Presbyterian Church - designed by architect HOK Architects + Partners LLP - one example of many recent high end properties developer Tom Weisenthal has purchased within walking distance ofCampbelltown center becoming home both to his luxury apartment complex Regency Towers [which features views down High Street] as well as commercial properties located at 9th Ave NW corner Wilson Rd just east/outside Of Town limits along with several thousand additional square feet (+/- office space) available for future development currently housing St Michaels Catholic Church[a beautiful neo Gothic Revival styled structure], JCPenney Supercenter #2 [one anchor tenant], Verizon Wireless corporate headquarters [the largest employer located within walking distance], numerous restaurants including 2 Morgan Stanley law firms [one anchor tenant], Bankers Trust Company offices (#1 business center location): Today's Campbelltown represents everything that made older rural communities throughout Maryland so successful beginning with easy access onto major highways complete with expressways running through them giving birth not onlyto sprawling suburbs like Bethesda or Silver Spring but also smaller towns such as Greenbelt MD [+30 miles west] making it easily possible for people living there not onlyto find jobs but also live close enough theretofor socializing without having TO leave their comfortable home radius!

New Carrollton, Maryland was founded in 1785 by two brothers, Isaac and John Carroll. The town sprang up around the location of a smallpile of stones that the Carrols had found while prospecting for coal near their home on the Potomac River. The original population of New Carrollton consisted of just twenty-two people. By 1812, however, there were more than one hundred residents living in the town. The town quickly became an important center for commerce and farming based on its location on the Susquehanna River. In 1814, New Carrollton was renamed after George Washington because it had been chosen as his main residence during his last years in office as President of the United States. The town also became known for its many fine churches and schools, including one built by President James K. Polk in 1892. Today, New Carrollton is a thriving community with a rich history that can be experienced through its museums and restaurants. Its downtown area is home to several shopping centers and professional services such as law enforcement and health care providers.
