New Carrollton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 12,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "New Carrollton" is derived from the Potomac River and the historical settlement of Carleton Court House on its banks. The town was established in 1792 as a small fencetown on land that had been part of Upper Marlboro Township since 1684. In 1871, it became an incorporated village; in 1952, it became a town. By 1870, New Carrollton had become one of the wealthiest towns in America because of its fertile agricultural land and its proximity to Baltimore and Westminster (then part of Prince George's County). Its residents exported goods such as coal and lumber to other parts of Maryland and Pennsylvania. They also erected expensive homes for themselves around Carleton Street and Market Place. In 1883–1885, General James Longstreet led Confederate forces against Union forces during the American Civil War at Gettysburg; many people in New Carrollton may have served in his unit or contributed money to help him purchase arms. As a result of this battle, many new settlers moved into New Carrollton from central Maryland including Millerstown (now McDonough), Three Rivers (now Harford County), Cumberland Valley (now Howard County), White Marsh Creek Settlement (now Frederick County) and more recently Springdale Township near Bowie Town Center (now Bowie). After Gettysburg ended with Union victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee on April 9 1865, many soldiers who were discharged or exchanged returned home soon after through various channels: most notably by traveling through Pennsylvania down the Susquehanna River valley to Westmoreland Township where they joined their families waiting on news back home before setting off again across country via wagon train called "the Great March". A few weeks later on April 15th 1865 - four days after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated - President Ulysses S Grant ordered all troops must return eastward within 72 hours or face consequences! This order caused much panic among those who had invested so heavily in southern plantation life when compared to people living northward...many blacks did manage make their way back home eventually but not until well after Reconstruction had already begun which left too much power disparities still extant between northerners & southpennies
