In the early 1900s, the Goudreau family ran a small grocery store in the heart of town. In 1916, they opened their first café, which served coffee and soup from upstairs. The Coffee House was later renamed The Olde Tavern and continues to serve quality coffee to this day. After World War II, demand for small batch coffee grew as people transitioned from using instant to brewing their own coffee. In 1958, The Coffee House became the first shop in Maryland to open an espresso machine. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. New Carrollton was founded on April 12, 1784 by Andrew Ellicott and his wife Mary Ellicott as a frontier settlement to serve as a stop on the horse and wagon road from West Point to Georgetown. In 1849 it became part of Baltimore City; in 1901 it became a part of Washington State. The first settlers in what would become New Carrollton were farmers who had come from eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. They arrived during the early 1800s for two reasons: to find land that had been given away by the government for abandoned or rural areas in western Maryland (including what is now Prince George's County), and because they thought that this area would be advantageous for trade with Philadelphia because of its longer path to the capital than any other region in Maryland. In 1784, after traveling through much of present-day Maryland including parts of Virginia and Pennsylvania, Andrew Ellicott decided to settle near West Point in order to make better connections with those areas via horseback transportation which he saw as an important means of communication between them and Baltimore. Soon after his arrival at West Point Village (later renamed New Carrollton), he met MaryEllicott who also settled there with her husband John Tryon Jr.. With their children John Tryon III (1785-1867), James Tryon (1787-1865) and Charlotte Tryon Gorges (1789-1863), they began raising crops, livestock and slaves along what would become known as Tryon Street SE which ran parallel to then MD Route 283 called "The Horse Road" today's Market Street NW). gradual growth set about within these small communities over time especially due to new transportation developments such as canals that allowed goods brought downriver from southern England or France via boats into Holland House Canals whereupon disembarked workers for long days loading onto boatsreturning upriver unloaded products thereby creating some very prosperous business opportunities both locally & nationally - many local businesses still remain active today!
