Salisbury, Maryland is a town in Caroline County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is home to the University of Maryland and its campus in Salisbury Township. Other notable businesses in the town include Eastern Shore Tea Company and UMD's Northcott-Fletcher School of Veterinary Medicine. The first permanent settler in what is now Salisbury was Nicholas Goodloe, who located near present-day Middletown on March 7, 1784. Goodloe named his new land for himself and his wife Sarah Stone (née Clark). The first school in what would become Salisbury was built on the site of today's Unitarian Universalist Church on Spring Street in 1805. In 1827, John Pugh purchased of land from Nicholas Goodloe east of present day Main Street which he called "the Lakes." He laid out a small township within this tract and named it after himself - Salisbury Township. This township contained only about thirty families but soon became very popular because it had excellent soil and streams for agriculture as well as many small businesses catering to settlers from all over Caroline County including clothiers, carpenters, artists/painters etc., making it one of the most prosperous townships in Caroline County during its early days. In 1838 when Baltimore & Ohio Railroad began construction through Caroline County along what is now Interstate 95 south from Fredericktown (now Frederick), Pugh sold his interest in Salisbury Township to their builder George Stephenson for $1 million dollars cash plus three thousand shares of stock that Stephenson issued to residents thereof upon purchase! Today there are still some descendants of those original investors living within our community although they no longer own any part or responsibility with regard to the railroad company or its properties! In 1878 when Washington Mutual Insurance Company opened up shop downtown across West Lombard Street from where today's Verizon Center stands – just two blocks away – tiny single family dwellings were becoming increasingly unaffordable as business boomed! By 1920 there were more than a hundred buildings housing merchants and employees inside Sallie Mae Hall on East Main Street while another fiftybusinesses lined South Market Place between Broadview Avenue and High streets! It wasn't until after World War II that Salisham began experiencing rapid industrialization thanks largely to nearby Johns Hopkins University which established an extensive research program here beginning with pioneering work done by candidate Drs. James Watsonand Francis Crick at their famous University Laboratory! With continuous growth came increased traffic congestion due especially to UMD’s burgeoning medical school which attracted world-renowned professors such as MedicalDr. Ernest notes “It has always been my belief that if we could control transportation we could control health care”; however despite various efforts by local authorities over time things proved increasingly difficult given both the need for ever expanding infrastructure (UMD added an additional building onto its campus shortly thereafter) as well asYYZY's heavy investment into large scale transportation projects throughout much of easternMaryland concurrently !!!!! Salisbury, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is one of two towns in Prince George's County (the other being Bowie) and it is the only incorporated municipality in the county. The original name for Salisbury was "Newstead". Salisbury was founded by colonists from England in 1638 as a small community on high ground near today's Bowie Street and College Avenue. In 1718, the town passed through an Act of Parliament to become part of Frederick County and remained so until 1959 when it became part of Prince George's County. Today, Salisbury remains an agricultural center with many farms producing corn, soybeans and wheat. The first school in Salisbury was built on what is now Meeting House Square in 1810. A second school opened in 1815 on Court Square across from present day Stonington Elementary School. The first teacher at that school was Mrs. Capps who taught Grades K-1 before moving to Rockville later that year where she taught middle grades for six years before retiring in 1836. One hundred students were enrolled at the new school when it opened but it closed within two years due to lack of money; however, some students continued to attend local public schools until 1949 when all public schools were consolidated into one system under then Governor Pendergast’s administration). In 1865, salinity caused water levels around nearby Bowie Creek to rise so much that saltwater began seeping into residents' wells and businesses resulted; this led eventually to the closure of most businesses and homes within a few miles of Bowie Creek after 1901 because there wasn't enough water available anymore following the construction of reservoirs upstream along with larger dams closer to downtown Salisbury which relieved some pressure on those nearer creek mouth while still providing drinking water for most people living within a reasonable distance (> 10 miles). However during prohibition era (1912-1921), much more business activity occurred ashore including bootlegging along with various other illicit activities; this increased demand for freshwater which lead finally Bureaucratic efforts during 1922-1924 totaling $4 million dollars ($ almost $ today) which failed due to low interest rates (< 2%) as well as lackadaisical attitude by businessmen who saw no need or benefit beyond their own businesses; despite this failure Bureaucratic officials decided again not pursue further salty water regulation however they did consider creating tidal marshes adjacent river shoreline effective flooding control measure against future storms etc.) One significant event from early days through 1960s included numerous protests against government policies such as education segregation (black children attending white schools), high taxes without corresponding benefits paid by taxpayers while elites received disproportionate amounts (~ 90%+ income tax exemption), discrimination against women (women could not work outside home raising children), poor housing conditions generally unfeeling towards working class citizens while wealthier citizens enjoyed fine houses surrounded by lush gardens Architecturally speaking these issues are known collectively as “The Great Gatsby Syndrome" or simply “Gatsby Syndrome." In 1960 referendum resulted Citizens voted overwhelmingly yes on forming their own government separate from neighboring jurisdictions resulting mostly outgrowth of activism surrounding newly formed Montgomery County government spearheaded largely by attorney Clarence Mitchell III & his wife Eleanor Roosevelt Mitchell who lived just outside downtown Bethesda & became involved politically throughout southeastern MD including Supportive Committee representing African Americans organized primarily around Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company located off Eastern Boulevard - egging them on constantly throughout 1961 thru 1963 Referendum results indicated overwhelming desire among nonspecific upscale voters residing east/west side & rural areas inside suburban watersheds NOT represented aforementioned neighborhoods (& these same non-spurred activists gradually shifted focus onto inner city politics since there appeared little chance redevelopment potential would develop east side if elected official positions remained open regardless) leading ultimately Political newcomer Earl Warren becoming James Webbbernite 3rd term Ulysses S Grant Memorial Committeeman beginning1964
