The Salisbury Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union army during the American Civil War. It was raised in Salisbury, Maryland on October 1, 1861, and mustered into service on November 3, 1861. The regiment was assigned to the 5th Brigade, 4th Division, Army of Northern Virginia. On December 12, 1861, it participated in the Battle of Seven Pines. The regiment lost a total of 20 officers and men killed or mortally wounded during its service.

Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Chevy Chase Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Salisbury was James Bacon who arrived in 1701. In 1821, John Dent purchased the land that now includes Salisbury from his brother Nicholas Dent and moved his family to this area from Winchester, Virginia. By 1827, both Danbury and Frederick were towns with over 10,000 residents each. In 1830, Thomas Pemberton founded Pembertontown on the east side of Harford River north of present day Salisbury. It was here that he built the first sawmill in Maryland which began operations in 1831. In 1840, William Hagerty platted what would become Salisbury on lands he had purchase from Nicholas Dent and John Fitzpatrick Sr.. Hagerty named it after him as an act of appreciation for services rendered during the war against Tripoli (1839-1840). In 1851 patent #210869 was issued to Elijah Bickerton for 640 acres (248 hectares) of land comprising much of modern day Salisbury township and portions of neighboring Frederick Township lying westward thence to a line drawn due south from said township center lines; &c., bounded by Rockville Pike on the north & east; by Harford River on the south & west; by White Marsh Creek on its lower course; also included within said patent are certain unenclosed farms situated between said boundaries: all being contiguous with present day Warwick Road running through same: Said patents forming one continuous piece of ground embracing about 320 acres (128 hectares). This grant increased Cornelius Vanderbilt's holdings considerably as it gave him access to important fishing grounds along both sides of Harford River up until Beaverdam Creek where they stopped granting patents altogether beginning in 1868 when government regulations reigned forbidding commercial Fishing activity near navigable rivers without special permits... It should be noted that these patents did not expire automatically but rather were renewable for an additional term or until sold or surrendered according to provisions made applicable thereto by act entitled "An Act To Regulate Commerce Amongst Our People", approved November 3rd 1865 following passage thereof through Congress... Salisbury soon became known for its lace industry which produced many items such as tablecloths and napkins used throughout America during this time period. The town prospered thanks to tourism which reached record levels during World War II due to military recruitment drives conducted here as well as production at local factories run by General Motors plants nearby... Today there are multiple restaurants including Blue Star Cafe(which opened in 2006), Prime Ribs(opened 1984), TGI Fridays(opened 1997), Applebee's(opening 2002) and Chili's(opening 1988). There is also a large Walmart located just outside town limits with several stores inside town limits including Sam's Club(2006), JCPenney(2012) and Macy's([2015]).

In 1828, Salisbury became the county seat of Prince George's County. In 1865, the town was merged with Frederick County to form new Prince George's County.
