The history of roasted coffee in Salisbury, Maryland goes back to at least 1875. It was then that an Italian immigrant named Giovanni da Cesena started selling coffee beans from his roastery in central Salisbury. The first known purchase of coffee made by the townspeople was a bag of ground beans bought for $1.25 per pound from Giovanni in 1876. In 1886, a German named Hermann Engels purchased the roastery and began importing fresh-roasted coffee from Italy. He introduced this type of coffee to the townspeople who were hesitant to try it because they thought it would be too strong. In 1912, another German named Wilhelm Kühn began selling roasted beans from his home on Main Street in Salisbury. This store soon became famous for its excellent quality, high price point, and wide variety of flavors. By the early 1920s, there were three stores operating in town: one run by Giovanni da Cesena, one by Wilhelm Kühn, and one by Hermann Engels. By this time, demand had increased so much for roasted coffee that two additional roasters had been started: Frank Hauschka & Sons (1926) and Gustav Fischer (1930). The popularity of roasted coffee led to the establishment of a cafetaria on Church Street serving both local residents and tourists throughout the 1930s; this café is now known as “The Peacock” Bar & Grill. At around this time, also beginning in earnest my research into Roasted Coffee History I stumbled upon evidence that some people living near where I am writing currently produce their own roasted beans! Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore- ANNapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Salisbury has been inhabited by humans since at least 10,000 BC. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Prince George's County was built in 1683 by Colonel John Smith and his men during the English Opium War with China. In 1755, the Treaty of Paris ended the Seven Years' War and ceded all of North America to Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Utrecht. As part of this treaty, Salisbury became a Crown Colony within British Columbia (now Canada). In 1785, King George II ceded control of Salisbury to Prince Frederick Augustus II of Brunswick-Lüneburg in order to improve relations between Great Britain and Hanoverian Germany following disputes over British colonies in that area. Today, parts of both jurisdictions still exist as Crown Colonies within their respective countries: for example, much of Brunswick-Lüneburg covers parts of Delaware while much territory falls under full German jurisdiction in Saxony/Anhalt). The town began to prosper during its early years as a result of its strategic location on two major waterways - the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay - and its close proximity to military installations such as Fort Meade and Annapolis Naval Base. However, it would not reach its current level until after World War II when new housing developments were constructed along Route 66 which ran through town center; this development led to an increase in traffic and congestion on local streets which negatively affected salishan businesses situated near Route 66 arteries such as First Street or High Street. However, despite these challenges over time, Salisbury has seen steady growth throughout recent decades due to various factors including increased employment opportunities within government agencies such as the Maryland State Police Department; expanding tourism; investment from entrepreneurs who have realized potential benefits from living close to downtown; and support from local philanthropic organizations who have helped contribute significantly towards overall community redevelopment projects dating back more than 50 years ago
