Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,271 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is considered to be one of the most rural towns in Maryland and was first settled by Europeans in 1736. It became a county seat in 1806 and has since been renamed for its original founder, Samuel Purchas Salisbury. The town is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, bordered by Anne Arundel County to the east and Prince George's County to the west. The town of Salisbury was first settled by Europeans in 1736 when they arrived from England on a group of thirteen ships called " Adventure ". The town site was chosen because it had an easy access road to water supplies and because it would be within range of friendly Native Americans who supplied them with food and shelter during their time ashore. As early as 1737, English settlers began construction on what would eventually become Salisbury Hall which served as the first brick courthouse in America. In 1801, King George I granted land to Samuel Purchas Salisbury for his new farmstead which he named after himself. This farmstead would ultimately become one of the largest farms in Prince George's County and remain in operation until 1971 when it was sold to Dean Foods subsidiary Dean Foods Incorporated . In 1916, Colonel House purchased 3 acres (1 km2) northeast of present-day Salisbury Hall from Samuel Purchas Salisbury for $4,500 . Colonel House built "House Hill", now known as Pioneer Park , which remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in town today. It wasn't until 1883 that Baltimore & Potomac Railroad began making service through present-day Salisbury Hall; this event helped spur economic development within the community over time. By 1901, there were already three stores/banking institutions open within two blocks (city limits) of where present day Home Depot stands today! Today little remains from those early days except for some local gravesites scattered around downtown area including Old Church Cemetery ; however much has changed since then including comprehensive restoration work done on both buildings between 2006-2008 that brought back many historic items inside while also adding new features such as air conditioning!
